MILLER LIFTS GUILFORD WOMEN PAST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN IN WOMEN'S HOOPS

Box Score

Greensboro, NC -- Senior forward Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) scored 14 of her game- and season-high 19 points in the second half as Guilford posted a 60-46 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win over visiting Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. Miller added a game-high 10 rebounds and recorded her team-best fourth double-double of the season in the Quakers' third straight ODAC triumph.

After a taking a hard-fought 22-20 halftime lead, Guilford (5-3, 3-1 ODAC) used a 13-4 spurt in the first 4:31 of the second half to break away. Miller scored eight points during the decisive run, which was capped by junior guard Erin Beacham's (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) natural three-point play to give the hosts a 35-24 edge. The Marlins (2-6, 2-3 ODAC) hung around and twice trimmed the deficit to five points, the last time with 5:47 left on a follow shot by senior center Janine Swanson (South Amboy, NJ/St. Mary Regional). The Quakers held Virginia Wesleyan to one field goal for the rest of the game and closed the contest on a 13-4 run.

One night after forcing Randolph-Macon into a season-high 33 turnovers, Guilford's defense produced 25 Virginia Wesleyan miscues, leading to 15 Quakers' points. Guilford has forced at least 21 turnovers in seven of its eight games.

Miller notched her 25th career double-double one night after becoming the sixth Guilford women's basketball player to compile 1,000 points and 600 rebounds in her career. She hit eight of 14 shots from the floor and made three of four free-throws. Beacham contributed nine points to the winning cause and junior guard Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) had six points, matched her career-high with a game-best seven assists and recorded six steals for the second straight game.

Rookie forward Tomorrow Lofton (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) paced the Marlins with 14 points and eight boards. She and Swanson (10 points, 9 rebounds) helped Virginia Wesleyan to 30 points in the paint and 14 second-chance points, which kept the visitors in the game in the second half. Rookie guard Devin Allen (Machipongo, VA/Northampton) added 10 points off the bench, six in the first half.

Guilford resumes ODAC play with a Tuesday night (1/9) home game against Bridgewater at 7:00 P.M., while Virginia Wesleyan starts a six-game home stand Monday night (1/8) with an ODAC contest versus Washington and Lee.
