SEVENTH-RANKED HAMPDEN-SYDNEY POSTS ODAC HOOPS WIN OVER GUILFORD

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (01/24/01) -- Freshman Brandon Randall (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the second half as visiting Hampden-Sydney beat Guilford, 63-54, for their seventh consecutive win Wednesday night. The league-leading Tigers, ranked seventh in this week's D3hoops.com Division III poll, improved to 16-1 overall and 10-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with their 14th straight win over Guilford.

Hampden-Sydney held the Quakers (8-10, 7-5 ODAC) without a field goal for over eight minutes during a decisive 17-4 run that gave the Tigers a 52-40 lead with 8:01 to play. Guilford pulled to within 57-50 after rookie forward Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) capped a 7-0 run with a steal and layup with 2:37 left. Guilford drew no closer.

"I thought this was a great ODAC road victory," said Tigers' head coach Tony Shaver. "We challenged the guys at halftime and then played great defense and shot well enough for the win."

Hampden-Sydney made nine of its first 11 field goals and jumped out to a 27-17 lead midway through the first half, but Guilford tied the game at 30 by halftime. Randall, who made six of nine field goals, opened the second-half scoring with his second three-pointer of the night and helped Hampden-Sydney to a three-point lead. Senior Todd Ashworth's (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) layup with 15:10 left gave Guilford its lone lead, 36-35, before the Tigers' decisive spurt.

"[Hampden-Sydney] had outstanding defense," Guilford head coach Butch Estes said. "I thought their defense got us rattled at points in the second half so that we weren't able to execute offensively." Guilford made nine of 32 field goals (.281) in the second half.

Ashworth led all scorers with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench. Junior center Aron McMillian (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) added nine points and seven rebounds in a losing cause. Junior forward Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) scored seven points and matched his career high with five steals.

Junior center Bobby Jackson (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) had nine points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Tigers. Senior forward Brett Thompson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) added four points and a game-high nine boards off the bench.

Shaver topped Estes in the fourth meeting between the two former High Point Central High School players and UNC Chapel Hill alums. Shaver, now 299-107 in 15 seasons at Hampden-Sydney, has led the Tigers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and six ODAC titles. Estes is in his second Guilford season and has guided the Quakers to eight wins, their most since 1994-95.

"Butch has those guys playing with a lot of passion," Shaver said. "We consider this a great victory."

The Quakers host league-rival Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon (1/27) at 2:00 PM. The Tigers seek to avenge their lone loss of the season Saturday (1/27) afternoon with a home ODAC contest against 19th-ranked Bridgewater.
