GUILFORD MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM UPSETS UNBEATEN BRIDGEWATER, 65-56

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (01/15/01) -- Sophomore guard Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) (pictured) scored 15 of his team-high 20 points in the second half as host Guilford knocked off previously unbeaten Bridgewater, 65-56, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action Monday night. The Eagles (13-1, 7-1 ODAC) entered the game ranked 10th in the most recent D3hoops.com Division III poll and winners of six straight against the Quakers (6-9, 5-4 ODAC).

Kindem.jpg (24032 bytes) "The key to victory tonight was our offensive patience and execution," Guilford head coach Butch Estes said. "It was a game where we probed their defense and got good shots and shot a good percentage [48.9%]. It was one of our best offensive games of the year."

The Eagles whittled a 12-point second-half deficit to three points, 51-48, with 5:15 left thanks to a 12-3 run capped by junior center Kyle Williford's (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) three-point goal. The teams traded possessions before Bridgewater senior Jermaine Reed (Richmond, VA/Lloyd C. Bird) committed an intentional foul on Kindem away from the ball just before the Quakers' shot clock expired. Kindem, who extended his consecutive free-throws streak to 19 in the game, canned both free throws and junior forward Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) knocked down a jumper on the Quakers' ensuing possession to swell the hosts' lead to 55-48 with 3:30 left.

Guilford made 12 of 17 free throws in the final four minutes to seal its first win over the Eagles since 1997. Williford completed a rare four-point play with 25 seconds left to bring Bridgewater to within 62-56, but fouled out on the next possession on the Eagles' third intentional foul of the game.

Williford, the ODAC's second-leading scorer, netted 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and led the Eagles with seven rebounds. Junior guard Matt Stevens (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) scored nine points for Bridgewater. The Eagles shot a season-low 39.6 percent from the floor, well off their league-leading 51.6 percent field-goal percentage.

"They are a balanced team with Williford leading them," Estes said. "Williford had another big night, but nobody else really had their typical night. Defensively we were pretty good."

Kindem shot four of six from the floor in the second half and made two three-pointers during an 8-0 run that gave Guilford its 12-point second-half lead. Ashworth, who made six of eight free throws in the final 2:22, finished with 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Woolley tallied 11 points on five-of-nine shooting, his best offensive showing since December 7.

Winners of three of their last four games, the Quakers seek to avenge a 50-48 January 3 home loss to Washington and Lee this Wednesday night (1/17) in Lexington, VA. The Eagles visit preseason ODAC favorite Roanoke Wednesday (1/17) at 7:00 P.M.
