Box Score Greensboro, NC -- Junior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett) paced five players in double-figure scoring with 17 points in Guilford's 87-40 season-opening women's basketball win over visiting Averett Tuesday night. The Quakers' defense forced 32 Cougars' turnovers and limited Averett (0-4) to 25.8 percent field-goal shooting.
The Quakers' (1-0) scored the first 14 points of the game and jumped out to a 51-22 halftime advantage. Beacham made five of eight shots from the floor and three free throws for 13 first-half points. Rookie forward Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VI) hit for eight of her 11 markers off the bench and grabbed five boards in the opening 20 minutes.
Guilford maintained its defensive pressure in the second half, which led to 16 of the Quakers' 20 fast-break points. Rookie guard A.J. Robertson (Eden, NC/Morehead) led the Quakers' second-half scorers with six of her 12 points off the bench.
Sophomore forward Laurie Clay (Skipwith, VA/Bluestone) paced the Cougars with nine points in a reserve role, while sophomore center Jennifer Nunley (Roanoke, VA/William Fleming) scored six points and snared a game-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore forward Amanda Veney (Roanoke, VA/Salem) contributed eight points, five boards and a game-high four blocks in a losing cause.
Guilford senior Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School) notched her 22nd career double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Beacham added eight boards, plus a game-high six assists and four of Guilford's 19 steals.
The Quakers, who lead the all-time series with Averett, 6-0, open their Old Dominion Athletic Conference slate this Thursday night (11/30) at Emory & Henry. The Cougars visit Meredith Thursday night in Raleigh.
