GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) hosted Greensboro College (2-0-0, 0-0-0 USA South) for its home opener on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Pride, 3-0, in a weather-shortened contest.
The Quakers were held without a shot in the opening half as Greensboro controlled possession and created seven shots, including four on goal. Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) played the first 45 minutes of the game, making one save and allowing two goals. The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Gustav Ohman found the back of the net before Jamie Davis doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute off a Kayden Brimah assist. Guilford entered halftime trailing 2-0.
The Quakers came out with more offensive pressure in the second half, recording all three of their shots and earning four corner kicks. Jake Carter (Madison, N.C.) and Camden Taylor (Roanoke, Va.) each recorded a shot early in the half, but neither attempt found the frame. With Xavier Porter (Belmont, N.C.) in the net, Greensboro extended its lead to 3-0 in the 54th minute when Jade Diane scored off an assist from Axel Garcia.
Porter kept the Quakers within reach throughout the second half, making four saves, and Guilford continued to generate opportunities late, earning three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
Greensboro finished the match with a 16-3 advantage in shots and held an 8-0 edge in shots on goal. The Quakers earned four corner kicks to Greensboro's seven, while both teams were called for 11 fouls.
With 11 minutes remaining in regulation, the match was halted due to lighting and ultimately suspended due to weather with Greensboro holding the 3-0 advantage.
The Guilford College men's soccer team continues its season on Wednesday, September 9 against Methodist University. First kick is scheduled for 6:00 PM at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
