Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 2 Washington & Lee in ODAC Opener

Motto makes 14 saves, holding the Generals to one goal

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Guilford College women's soccer team (1-3-2, 0-1-0 ODAC) battled No. 2 nationally ranked Washington & Lee University (6-0-0, 2-0-0 ODAC) Wednesday evening, falling to the Generals, 1-0, at Watt Field.

Washington & Lee held the advantage in possession and chances throughout the match, recording 39 shots, including 15 on goal, while Guilford was held without a shot. The Generals also earned 16 corner kicks compared to the Quakers' zero. Despite the pressure, Guilford's defense and goalkeeper Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) kept the Quakers within one goal throughout the contest.

Motto turned in another standout performance in goal, making 14 saves across 90 minutes. The sophomore made six saves in the opening half before adding eight more after halftime, repeatedly keeping Washington & Lee from extending its lead. Motto made several key stops from close range and on shots directed toward the corners, including saves in the final six minutes to keep the Quakers within striking distance.

The Generals found the breakthrough in the 12th minute off a feed from Sydney Valentine to Avery Hannah, who crossed the ball to Megan Zimmerman for the finish. Guilford's defense settled from there, with Motto making four saves in nine minutes before adding two more stops in the final minutes of the opening half.

Washington & Lee continued to apply pressure following halftime, but Motto and the Quaker defense continued to hold the Generals to the one-goal advantage. Motto stopped shots from multiple Washington & Lee players early in the second half before making four final saves in the last 25 minutes of play.

The Quakers return to action Saturday, September 26, traveling to Eastern Mennonite University for the 2:00 PM conference match-up.
