Berry Nets Tally, But Women’s Soccer Upended At Methodist

Monarchs’ posts friendly early in intrastate clash

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Guilford College women's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) visited Methodist University (1-1-0, 0-0-0 USA South) on Wednesday night but the Duggins Soccer Stadium posts proved friendly to the hosts, with multiple ricochets leading to tallies in a 4-1 decision.

Guilford made up a ton of ground statistically in the second half, but still finished on the wrong end of a 16-11 discrepancy in total shots and 10-7 differential in shots on goal. The saves and corners were even with six and three respectively while MU committed more fouls, 10-8.

Criss-crossing on her line all night long, Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) was unlucky on this night, ending up tagged with a career-high four goals allowed on 10 shots on target, making six save in defeat to fall to 1-1-0. Kiera Ferguson went uncontested in the opening half for MU, improving to 1-1-0 with a shutout half before Sabrina Nassar took over in the second half, making six saves and allowing one goal.

Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) made it two-for-two with her second goal in as many official games for Guilford, but she ended up being the extent of the offense. Emma Goodnough (Oviedo, Fla.)  attempted three shots, all on target while Kylie Muse (Browns Summit, N.C.) had a pair of off-frame looks.

The hosts got a pair of goals from Allye Carter and single notches from Katrina Cardiff and Jordan Mazzei. Mazzei's ended up as the game-winner while Cardiff added an assist with Ryley Brinkley, Sydney Campbell, and Summer Ward also adding distributions.

Methodist wasted little time breaking onto the scoresheet, as an early foul granted free kick from about 25 yards out off the top-left corner of the 18'. The Quakers denied the first try with the ball rolling to virtually the same spot off the top-right corner of the 18' for a shot sent in by Campbell, but it clanged off the post. That rebound found the feet of Carter though, and with Motto crossed up from having to zig-zag back and forth across her line, she was able to trickle a shot into the bottom-right of the frame for the opening tally in just the matches' third minute.

Later in the half, the Monarchs cleared their zone, but on the counterattack, a misplay by Muse gave a free run down the middle of the pitch for Cardiff. Motto wisely extended up off her line, meeting Cardiff at the ball with the first attempt from the top of the 18' getting saved by the Quakers keeper. Cardiff caught up to the loose ball, and took another chance, now with a wide-open net, but she somehow hit the left post. However, Mazzei was there to clean up the mess, tapping home the carom for her first goal in the 31st minute.

The score held at the half at 2-0 but it could have been far worse with the Monarchs holding a 9-1 advantage on total shots and a holding Guilford without a shot on goal in the half against five of their own.

Guilford got one back in the 54th minute. A foul from about 35 yards away just offset on the right wing granted the guests a free kick from a great spot. Berry took full advantage, doing it herself, sending an absolute rocket and perfectly tucking it into the upper-left 90 for her second goal of the year.

Unfortunately, MU opened it back out to a multi-goal lead a few minutes later, in the 64th. The hosts got on the attack and Ward sent a dish across the top of the 18', one that allowed Carter to step into a shot from beyond the right post and shooting cross-crease into the left of the goal for her second tally of the evening. They finalized the scoring with Brinkley sending a perfect ball, splitting the GC defenders, allowing Cardiff to catchup and take advantage this time, netting a tally into the bottom-middle of the goal in the 81st minute, bringing the final tallies to 4-1.

Guilford hits the road one more time on Saturday, September 12th, visiting the reigning USA South champions, Brevard College for a 7:00 PM kick in the mountains.
