Women’s Lacrosse Travels to Lynchburg for Conference Clash

Nusraty records 14 saves; Fossie tallies team-high two assists

LYNCHBURG, Va. The Guilford College women's lacrosse team (6-7, 1-4 ODAC) faced a tough challenge Wednesday afternoon, falling 22-4 to the University of Lynchburg (9-4, 3-2 ODAC) at Shellenberger Field. Despite a resilient effort, the Quakers were unable to overcome a potent Hornets attack that surged early in the contest.

Marlene Nusraty (Damascus, Md.) remained busy throughout the 60 minutes, facing 46 total shots and turning away 14 attempts for a .390 save rate. In the opposing crease, Olivia Owings earned the win for the Hornets, recording five saves.

Lynchburg's performance featured Margaret Scoggin, who tallied six points on two goals and four assists. Emmy Clay, Neely Morris, Lily Messineo, and McKenna Steinau each contributed multi-point efforts to fuel the Hornets' victory.

Hannah McMasters (Browns Summit, N.C.) and Chanelle Fossie (Westampton, N.J.) paced the Quakers' playmaking effort, with McMasters recording a goal and an assist, while Fossie provided a team-high two helpers. Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.), Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.), and Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) each found the back of the net once.

Defensively, Natalia Rubio (Greensboro, N.C.) scooped up two ground balls, while Brenna Holden (Kernersville, N.C.) and DeFeo each recorded a caused turnover to disrupt the Hornet transition.

Lynchburg asserted control from the opening draw, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to apply pressure in the second period, outscoring Guilford to take a 13-1 lead into the intermission. The lone Quaker goal of the half came at the 9:58 mark when Garland converted on a man-up opportunity following an assist from Fossie.

Guilford found its rhythm in the third quarter, holding the Hornets to just two goals while finding the net twice themselves. McMasters sparked the momentum with an unassisted free-position goal, followed closely by a DeFeo strike to bring the score to 15-3.

In the final frame, Wood added a late goal for Guilford off a feed from McMasters, but the Hornets' depth ultimately sealed the game, 22-4.

Guilford will look to bounce back and defend their home turf as they host Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday, April 11th. The opening draw is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
