LEXINGTON, VA. – The Guilford College women's tennis team (8-5, 4-3 ODAC) faced a formidable road test on Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-1 to No. 12 Washington & Lee University (16-1, 10-0 ODAC) at the Lower Tennis Courts.
Doubles play saw the Generals take control early to secure the opening point. At the No. 1 position, the duo of
Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, TX) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) fell 6-0 to Sarah Donnelly and Allie Murrell.
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) dropped a 6-0 decision at No. 2, while
McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.) and
Brooke Tsuei (Summerfield, N.C.) battled for a game in a 6-1 loss at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, Dirk grinded out a tough 7-5 victory in the opening set and was locked in a 5-5 battle in the second before her opponent was forced to retire. The victory extends Dirk's personal winning streak to 13 consecutive matches.
Belnap, Sizemore, Merritt, Tsuei, and
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) all put up determined efforts in their respective matches against a deep Washington & Lee lineup. Sizemore notably pushed Sarah Ladd in the second set of her No. 3 singles match before falling 6-0, 6-3.
The Quakers will look to return to the win column this Saturday, April 11th, when they travel to face Hollins University. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
