GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's tennis team (9-6, 5-4 ODAC) celebrated Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell in a 4-3 nail-biter to the University of Lynchburg (10-4, 6-3 ODAC) at the McMichael Courts.
The match began with a pre-game ceremony honoring the career of senior
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.).
Once play commenced, the Quakers took an early advantage by clinching the doubles point. At the No. 1 position,
Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, TX) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) delivered a 6-4 victory over Isadora Lima and Kayla Kosiorek.
McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.) and
Brooke Tsuei (Summerfield, N.C.) secured the point for Guilford with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, Dirk continued her dominant run through the ODAC, remaining perfect in conference play with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 "double bagel" victory over Lima at the top flight. The win marks Dirk's 14th consecutive singles victory.
Belnap capped off her Senior Day celebration with a strong individual performance at No. 2 singles, defeating Kosiorek 6-0, 6-4.
Mendez,
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.), Merritt, and Tsuei fought hard in their respective singles matches, but Lynchburg managed the 4-3 victory.
The Quakers have a quick turnaround as they conclude the regular season tomorrow, Sunday, April 19th. Guilford will host Shenandoah University at the McMichael Courts with the first serve scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
