Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (0-6, 0-0 ODAC) continued its road swing Friday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision to Pfeiffer University (6-1, 0-0 USA South) at the Knapp Tennis Center. Despite another standout performance from the top of the rotation, the Falcons' depth proved to be the difference-maker in the non-conference dual.
The match began with a tough stretch in doubles play, as Pfeiffer utilized their home-court advantage to sweep all three flights and secure the opening point.
In singles action,
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) provided the highlight of the day for the Quakers. Competing at the No. 1 position, Mercedes dismantled Pfeiffer's Valter Albuquerque in a clinical straight-sets performance (6-1, 6-0).
At the No. 2 flight,
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) showcased his resilience in the longest match of the afternoon. After dropping the opening set 6-2, Oye battled back to claim the second set 6-3 and force a deciding tiebreaker. However, he narrowly fell in the frame, 10-7.
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.),
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.),
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.), and
Ahmaad Abdul-Haqq (Greensboro, N.C.) all competed hard in their respective singles matches, but the Falcons managed to take the remaining courts to clinch the overall victory.
After having a week to regroup, the Quakers will travel to Bridgewater College on Saturday, March 14, for their conference opener. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
