DANVILLE, Va. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (1-10, 1-2 ODAC) faced a tough road test on Wednesday afternoon, falling 7-0 to Averett University (4-4, 4-0 ODAC) at the Averett Tennis Courts. Despite the sweep, the Quakers showed flashes of resilience against a Cougars squad that remains undefeated in conference play.
The Cougars secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, with a win by default at No. 3.
Singles play was highlighted by a gritty performance from
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) at the No. 1 spot. After dropping the first set 6-2, Oye fought back to take the second set 6-3, forcing a decisive 10-point tiebreaker. However, Satwik Kollepalli managed to edge out the victory with a 10-8 score in the final frame.
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.),
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.),
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.), and
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) all put up determined efforts in their respective matches against a deep Averett lineup. The Cougars also earned a point by default at the No. 6 singles position to complete the victory.
The Quakers will look to regroup and bounce back this Saturday, March 28th, when they return to their home courts to host Randolph-Macon College. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
