Men’s Lacrosse Blanked By No. 17 Washington & Lee

Quakers return to league play, cannot keep pace with reigning ODAC Champs

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Guilford College men's lacrosse team (1-5, 0-2 ODAC) was shutout, 25-0, by No. 17 Washington & Lee University (6-4, 3-0 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at Wilson Field on Wednesday night.

The Generals dominated in every facet of the game, taking more shots, 37-7, including 31-5 on-target. The turnovers were fairly close, with GC committing 12 against the hosts' nine, though there were not too many opportunities to create them due to a 25-4 advantage in the circle. W&L also successfully cleared all-18 of their chances while the Quakers finished 10-for-12.

Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) did not stand a chance against the peppering of shots sent his way, making six saves against 20 goals allowed in the game's first half, falling to 1-5. Lucas Satterwhite (Oxford, N.C.) took over in the second half, allowing all-five on-frame shots he faced to find twine. The hosts went with a keeper a quarter with starter JJ Kim going uncontested in the first frame to get the win and improve to 3-0.

Nick Ianonne (Wellington, Fla.) fired nearly half of GC's shots in the game, with three, including two on-target. He also collected a team-high four groundballs. Camo Campbell (Flowery Branch, Ga.), Jason Campbell (Fairfax, Va.), and Kenneth Crowley (Charlotte, N.C.) all had shots on frame. Hudson Bosland (Otisville, N.Y.) also attempted a shot while causing a pair of turnovers.

W&L had 15 different players score goals and 14 pitch in assists. Garrett Ferguson, James Haley, and Harrison Hanson each had a hat-trick with Haley adding two helpers to finish with five points. Luke Caldwell and Tucker Davis also had five points each with two goals and three assists. Thomas Moxley went 8-for-8 in the circle and scooped a game-high six groundballs.

This one got out of hand quickly, with the hosts scoring twice in the opening two minutes of play. James Meyer got a man-up tally for what ended up as the game-winning tally 65 seconds in benefitting from a Caldwell assist before Haley set up Max Fertels. Haley then went on the receiving end of a Caldwell dish ahead of the 11-minute mark then Meyer scored his second and Fertels matched him for the Generals. Their pull-away stretch of play came over 123 seconds from 6:41 through 4:38, with W&L netting five goals in that span. An Elliot Cohen tally closed the quarter at an 11-0 score.

The onslaught maintained in the second, with the hosts netting nine unanswered before calling off the dogs in the second half as the teams agreed to play 10-minute quarters for the final-two frames. In the third, W&L backed off to score just once before putting up four in the fourth, making the final score 25-0.

Guilford heads north again to play Shenandoah University on Saturday, March 28th at 1:00 PM for their next game.
