WINCHESTER, Va. – The Guilford College men's lacrosse team (1-6, 0-3 ODAC) fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action to Shenandoah University (3-8, 1-3 ODAC) at Shentel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets fired 58 shots in the game against 36 by the Quakers including 40-22 in shots on goal and it was actually the guests who won the battle in the circle, 17-13. What plagued GC on this day was ball control, registering only a 50% success rate on 24 clear tries while totaling 29 turnovers as a team while SU finished with 12 turnovers while going 16-of-17 on clearances.
Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) cleared a .500 save rate, making 21 stops against 19 goals allowed, but the vast shot volumes are just too much for the senior who took the loss to fall to 1-6. Ryan Feldman got the nod in the cage for Shenandoah, making six stops against four goals permitted in a winning effort, improving to 2-2.
Jason Campbell (Fairfax, Va.) headlined the Guilford attack, scoring three goals and assisting on two others to match his career-high with five points with his first-career multi-assist game.
Kenneth Crowley (Charlotte, N.C.) has a goal and the other two Quaker assists, as GC collected a season-high four helpers.
Nick Ianonne (Wellington, Fla.) netted a tandem of goals while going 17-for-25 on faceoffs and scooped a game-high 10 groundballs.
A dozen Hornets contributed on the scoreboard including Jake Green's hat trick with two helpers. Liam Arnsmeyer led all players in points with six by way of two goals and four assists, adding four groundballs and a couple caused turnovers. Noah Nolt had two goals and a trio of assists plus a team-leading five groundballs.
The Quakers actually opened this one's scoring, getting a prolonged opening possession before getting an
Adrian Moorman (Ottawa, Canada) goal off a Crowley assist 78 seconds in, but it would be all Shenandoah the rest of the frame. Cody Griffis leveled the score under a minute later before Arnsmeyer set up Ryan Ho on the man advantage to claim a lead they would never relinquish. Dylan Foughty scored back-to-back goals then Griffis scored his second of the frame and Nolt closed the quarter giving the hosts a 6-1 lead at the end of one.
Arnsmeyer opened the second making it seven unanswered for SU before they settled into a 2-for-1 pattern with SU countering goals by Campbell, Crowley, and Campbell again with a pair of their own. Mixed in the stretch was the eventual game-winner scored by D.J. Lee. In the end the hosts held a 13-4 lead at the half.
SU tacked on a pair over the first five minutes of the third before letting off the gas some, and GC did cash in with a quick 3-0 spurt to close the frame. Shenandoah scored four in the fourth while Iannone mixed in a Quaker goal as the final score came out to 19-8.
GC returns to Appenzeller Field next to host Randolph College for a matchup on Wednesday, April 1
st at 6:00 PM.
