GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's tennis team (6-3, 3-1 ODAC) continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, securing a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Sweet Briar College (1-5, 1-2 ODAC) at the McMichael Courts.
Guilford wasted no time establishing control during doubles play, sweeping all three flights to earn the initial point. At the No. 1 position,
Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, TX) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) cruised to a 6-2 win over Alex Guilarte and Lucia Bovard. The No. 2 duo of
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) mirrored that success with a 6-2 victory, while
McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.) and
Brooke Tsuei (Summerfield, N.C.) completed the sweep at the No. 3 spot, also winning 6-2.
In singles action, Dirk remained undefeated at the top of the lineup, dominating 6-4, 6-2 to secure the point and extend her personal win streak to nine matches. Merritt provided another spark at No. 4, delivering a nearly flawless 6-0, 6-1 performance against Atty Bestwick, and Tsuei capped off the scoring for Guilford with a spectacular 6-0, 6-0 "double bagel" at the No. 6 position.
At No. 2 singles, Belnap displayed incredible resilience in a three-set thriller. After splitting the first two sets 6-2, 2-6, Belnap narrowly fell 10-5 in a tiebreaker. Sizemore and
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) also put up strong efforts in their respective matches against a competitive Sweet Briar lineup.
The Quakers will look to keep the momentum going next Saturday, March 28th, when they host Randolph-Macon College. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
