GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (1-8, 1-2 ODAC) continued their homestand on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision to the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College (6-5, 2-0 ODAC) at the McMichael Courts.
At No. 1 doubles, the pairing of
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) continued their dominant form. The duo remained perfect on the week, sweeping Thomas Davis and Emerson Rice with a convincing 6-0 win. However, the Tigers claimed the doubles point by taking the matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights.
The highlight of the afternoon for Guilford was the resilient play of
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.). After dropping a difficult opening set 6-0 at the No. 2 singles position, Hardie had a spectacular comeback against Dillon McReynolds. He battled back to take the second set 7-5 and outlasted his opponent in a thrilling 6-4 third set to secure a point for the Quakers.
In other singles action, Oye displayed grit at the No. 1 spot, pushing Davis to the limit before falling in a tight 7-5, 6-4 contest.
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.),
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.),
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.), and
Ahmaad Abdul-Haqq (Greensboro, N.C.) all put up strong efforts against a deep Hampden-Sydney roster.
The Quakers will have a quick turnaround as they travel to take on North Carolina Central University tomorrow, Sunday, March 22nd. First serve for the road match is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
