The victory was a statement for the Quakers, who handed the WildCats just their second loss of the year and their first defeat in conference play.
Guilford secured a vital advantage early by clinching the doubles point. The pairing of
McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.) and
Brooke Tsuei (Summerfield, N.C.) provided the initial spark with a controlled 6-3 win over Mikayla Smith and Natalie Thompson.
Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, Texas) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) outlasted Fleur Gaalman and Sophia Cahue in a 7-6 tiebreak battle, which allowed the Quakers to enter singles play with a 1-0 lead.
At the No. 1 flight, Dirk defeated Rachel Combs with a 6-1, 6-0 decision, extending her personal singles winning streak to eight matches. Mendez showed incredible poise at the No. 3 flight, securing a 7-4, 6-4 straight-sets victory to help keep Guilford in front. The match was ultimately sealed at the No. 6 position by Tsuei, who delivered a 6-1, 6-4 win to clinch the team victory for the Quakers.
