BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (1-6, 1-0 ODAC) broke into the win column in emphatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, securing a 6-1 victory over Bridgewater College (5-5, 0-2 ODAC) at the Mapp-Whitelow Tennis Courts.
Guilford established control early by claiming the doubles point. The No. 1 pairing of
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) delivered a swift 6-1 victory over Corey Beshoar and Levi Widelich. At the No. 2 position,
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.) and
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) clinched the opening point for the Quakers with a 6-3 win against Eli Entsminger and Logan Garner.
The momentum continued into singles play, where Guilford took five out of six matches to seal the victory. Mercedes set the pace at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Oye followed with a nearly flawless 6-1, 6-0 performance at the No. 2 spot.
The afternoon was highlighted by career milestones for two Quakers. Hardie earned his first career singles victory at the No. 3 flight, defeating Steven Perry 6-1, 6-2. Shortly after,
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.) secured his own first career win at the No. 4 position, shutting out his opponent in the second set for a 6-4, 6-0 result. Johnson added to the tally at No. 5, posting a consistent 6-2, 6-2 win to round out the scoring for Guilford.
The Quakers will look to build on this breakthrough performance when they return home for their next match on Wednesday, March 18th. Guilford is scheduled to host Randolph College with first serve set for 3:00 PM.
