Strong Scoring Effort Highlights Women’s Lacrosse Battle Against Methodist

McMasters nets four goals; Fossie and Parker record first collegiate tallies

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite an impressive offensive performance from Hannah McMasters (Browns Summit, N.C.) and multiple milestone goals, the Guilford College women's lacrosse team (0-3, 0-1 ODAC) dropped a non-conference contest to Methodist University (2-2, 0-0 USA South), 18-9, on Wednesday night at Appenzeller Field.

Marlene Nusraty (Damascus, Md.) remained a workhorse in the cage for the Quakers, recording nine saves against a Monarch attack that fired 31 total shots. On the opposite end, Methodist goalkeeper Victorianna Murray turned away two shots to preserve the Monarchs' lead.

The Monarchs were fueled by Layla Wiesenfeld, who led all scorers with nine goals and two assists. Brooke Murrell contributed three scores and an assist, while Rylie Sturgill and Jenifer Ferreira each added two goals to Methodist's winning effort.

McMasters led the Guilford offense with four goals, while Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) added a hat trick.

The night featured collegiate milestones for Chanelle Fossie (Westampton, N.J.) and Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.), who both netted their first career goals during the Quakers' second-half rally. Both players contributed defensively as well, with Fossie scooping up three ground balls and Parker adding one.

More standouts include Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.), who anchored the possession game with a season-high five draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers, as well as Natalia Rubio (Greensboro, N.C.), who recorded a pair of caused turnovers. Also in the defensive effort, Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) and Kaylee Carr (Plant City, Fla.) each tallied two ground ball pickups.

After falling behind 7-1 in the first frame, Guilford outscored the Monarchs 4-3 in the second quarter to enter halftime trailing 10-5.

The Quakers continued to fight in the third, receiving goals from McMasters, DeFeo, and Parker to outpace the Monarchs' scoring for much of the period before ending the frame down 14-8.

DeFeo opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal at the 14:04 mark to bring the Quakers within five, but Methodist responded with a late run to seal the 18-9 result.

The Quakers will hit the road for their next contest as they travel to Brevard, N.C., to take on Brevard College on Tuesday, March 3rd. The opening draw is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
