McMasters and Garland Shine in Season Opener at Pfeiffer

Amidst strong offensive outings, Quakers fall 17-13 in road contest against Falcons

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Despite five goals from Hannah McMasters (Browns Summit, N.C.) and a seven-point performance by Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.), the Guilford College women's lacrosse team (0-1, 0-0 ODAC) dropped its season opener to Pfeiffer University (2-0, 0-0 USA South), 17-13, on Saturday afternoon at Lefko-Mills Field.

The Falcons outshot the Quakers 42-24, though Guilford remained highly efficient, placing 20 of their 24 attempts on goal.

Marlene Nusraty (Damascus, Md.) turned in a resilient performance in the cage, recording 12 saves against a persistent Pfeiffer attack. On the offensive end, McMasters put in five goals on nine shots, and Garland followed closely with four goals and two assists, while also tallying three draw controls. Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) added two tallies, and Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) notched a goal in the effort. Defensively, Trinity Whitfield (Greensboro, N.C.) and Leyla Strong (Concord, N.C.) anchored a backline that successfully cleared 13 of 20 attempts.

The Falcons were led by Analise Robinson, who scored six goals, and Quinn Branca, who added four.

The Quakers faced an early 3-0 deficit but battled back late in the first quarter with unassisted goals from Wood and McMasters.

Guilford surged in the second frame, using a 3-0 run over a span of just 35 seconds, highlighted by two goals from Garland and one from Wood, to take a 7-6 lead. However, a late Falcon goal sent the teams into halftime tied at 7-7.

Pfeiffer found its rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring the Quakers 6-2.

Trailing 13-9 entering the final period, Garland struck early to keep the Quakers within reach. DeFeo converted a free-position shot with 3:09 remaining to make it a three-goal game, and McMasters added her fifth goal in the final minute, but the Falcons secured three goals and a late insurance tally to seal the result, 17-13.

Guilford returns to Greensboro for its home and conference opener on Tuesday, February 17. The Quakers will host the Generals of Washington & Lee University at the Armfield Athletic Center, with the first draw scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
