Women’s Basketball Falters Late In Comeback-Bid Against Randolph-Macon

Scott dominates career-best outing, not enough for Quakers' triumph.

ASHLAND, Va. - Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) notched her career-best of 37 points as the Guilford College women's basketball team (18-4, 9-5 ODAC) traveled to Randolph-Macon College (17-6, 11-3 ODAC) in a crucial conference-clash. After a slow start early, the Quakers would climb back midway in the fourth, unfortunately, falling short to the Yellow Jackets, 83-75, inside Crenshaw Gym Saturday evening.

Guilford would highlight a solid shooting performance overall in the field, firing .410 (25-61), stalling around the three-point arc, shooting .300 (6-20) after a cruising start in the first half. Randolph-Macon would command in all-aspects offensively, launching .542 (32-59) from the field and .444 (8-18) from the arc. The Quakers would claw back after Yellow Jacket foul trouble, rolling past Randolph-Macon at the line, shooting .862 (19-22) compared to R-MC's .458 (11-24) showing at the line.

In Scott's career-high display, she would have offensive-control in the field shooting .667 (12-18) from that mark, 1.000 (4-4) from the three-point arc, and .900 (9-10) from the line, with one assist and one steal defensively. Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) would follow suit with 14 points of her own, keeping Guilford in the game from shooting .857 (6-7) from the line with six rebounds, four defensively, with one block and one steal. Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded nine points of her own from converting .375 (3-8) from the field, .333 (1-3) from the arc, and 1.000 (2-2) from the line, collecting two steals defensively.

Erin Porter would top Randolph-Macon with 21 points, controlling the court from both sides of the ball. Porter launched .538 (7-13) from the field, .500 (4-8) from the three-point arc, and 1.000 (3-3) from the line, with one block and three steals defensively. Sam Smith would hold strong with 20 points of her own, shooting .467 (7-15) from the field, .400 from the three-point arc, and .444 (4-9) from the line.

The contest would commence with a dynamic-start offensively by Randolph-Macon through a duo of threes by Porter and conversions from the field by Mackenzie Matheny, ending period one with a 26-18 start in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

Massenburg and Giannopoulou would keep the Quakers in the game during the second, matching R-MC from cashing in on their shots from the field to only trail 48-37 at the break.

Defensive troubles would ensue for Guilford heading into the third, leading Smith to command all scoring opportunities the Yellow Jackets could find to extend their lead, 66-54, heading into the fourth.

Scott's career-evening offensively would launch the Quakers chances for a comeback-victory, unfortunately falling short in the closing stages of regulation, 83-75, in favor of Randolph-Macon.

Guilford will return for their final home matchup of the regular season, battling against the Cougars of Averett University on Wednesday, February 18th, on Jack Jensen Court inside the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse. Tip-off commences at 7:00 PM.
