Men’s Basketball Celebrates Seniors, Reigning Champs, Fall To Hampden-Sydney

Tigers’ balance bests Salters’ 35 in pivotal conference clash

GREENSBORO, N.C. – It was a celebratory Saturday afternoon for the Guilford College men's basketball team (12-11, 6-8 ODAC), as they honored the seven senior members of their 2025-26 team, their 2024-25 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Champion squad, and their trio of ODAC Hall of Fame inductees on Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown FieldHouse, but unfortunately their on-court result was not as joyous, falling to Hampden-Sydney College (14-9, 8-6 ODAC), 88-83 in conference action.

The Quakers had a strong shooting night, shooting .429 overall, .444 from range, and .813 on 16 tries from the line while the Tigers were slightly worse from three but better overall with a .485 field goal percentage, .360 mark from distance, and .625 mark at the line on 24 attempts. The difference ended up being Guilford allowing their guests to get into the halfcourt offense more-often than usual, forcing a mere 13 turnovers, tied for their fewest since the season-opener and as a result, they lost the points off turnovers battle for just the second time all year, 17-12.

Braylen Salters (Cleveland, Ohio) continued doing whatever he pleases against the defenses around the ODAC, surpassing 30 points for the fourth time in five games, this time with 35 on 11-of-22 overall and 4-for-8 from three. Ke Edwards (Hickory, N.C.) was great again, netting 17 points on 7-of-12 including a career-high three threes. Dawson Edwards (Durham, N.C.) thrived in his third senior day, netting 14 points on 5-of-7, adding team-highs of seven rebounds and four assists.

Six Tigers reached double-figures in the points column, led by Peter Moye's 17 on 7-for-13. Tyree White added 14 points and a team-best four assists in reserve and Kolby Wright also contributed a dozen. Tugg Bizzelle and Alex Cannon pitched in 10 each with Cannon notching his first-collegiate double-double, claiming a game-high 11 rebounds.

Pregame, the Quakers men's basketball program recognized their six accomplished seniors, Rival Axselle (Mechanicsville, Va.), Kody Clayton (Cary, N.C.), Ke Edwards, Ryan Jaworski (Cary, N.C.), Gabe Proctor (Apex, N.C.), and Cameron Taylor (Mount Airy, N.C.), plus graduate student Dawson Edwards, a group that helped lead GC to the 2024 Division-III Final Four and win the 2025 ODAC Championship. Guilford also revealed the banner commemorating that title ahead of tipoff.

Once the game began, the guests seemed to get the burst of energy resulting from the pregame festivities, holding the lead 21-17 just after the halfway mark, although a Ke Edwards three, Dawson Edwards two, and Salters trey flipped that advantage out of the under-eight. The long-time ODAC rivals continued to go back-and-forth, with neither team getting beyond five points in the first half, and the Quakers taking a 38-36 edge into the locker room.

Guilford Athletics honored their trio of inductees to the inaugural ODAC Hall of Fame class at halftime, recognizing Brenda (Davis) Goble '94, Ben Strong '08, and Coach Jack Jensen posthumously.

Out of the break, GC netted eight of the first dozen points, making their advantage game-high six points but the Tigers then made their run. A 28-11 span over the ensuing eight-ish minutes flipped the lead to the Tigers before Proctor finally halted the run with a three. Guilford immediately closed the gap, leveling the score at 72-all with five minutes to play thanks to a 15-4 run. Unfortunately, they could not flip the lead and Proctor's open three in the closing seconds was offline, finalizing the score at 88-83.

Lots of postseason scenarios remain open into the season's final week, but GC can clinch a berth on Wednesday, February 18th when they visit Averett University at 7:00 PM.
