HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Guilford College men's soccer team (2-5-3, 1-1-1 ODAC) picked up its first conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Eastern Mennonite University (3-7-1, 1-2-0 ODAC) by a 3-1 final at EMU Turf Field. This victory saw not one, but two Quakers score their first collegiate goals.
Guilford controlled the match offensively, outshooting Eastern Mennonite, 16-8, while putting seven shots on goal compared to three for the Royals. The Quakers also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks; The Quakers had more foul trouble having 13 while the Royals only earned 7.
Sam Bayer (Lakeville, Minn.) played the full 90 with 1 goal allowed and 2 saves.
David Mestre (Valencia, Spain) led the Quakers with three shots, one of them being his first goal of the season which was assisted by
Talan Coogle (Lexington, N.C.).
Sebastian Urgiles (Charlotte, N.C.) also recorded three shots with one on goal. Meanwhile,
Camden Taylor (Roanoke, VA) recorded two shots, both on goal and one assist, with one reaching the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Rafa Albesa Boix (Castellon De La Plana, Spain) held two shots with one going in to add to the Quakers score, he also held one assist.
Guilford fell behind early, with Eastern Mennonite scoring in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Quakers continued to pressure the Royals' defense and created several opportunities throughout the opening half. Guilford found the equalizer in the 36th minute when
Albesa Boix finished off an assist from
Taylor. Just under four minutes later, the two traded roles, when Taylor found the back of the net off an assist from Albesa Boix, giving the Quakers a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
Guilford continued to control the pace in the second half, limiting Eastern Mennonite to three shots while creating seven of its own. The Quakers added an insurance goal in the 86th minute when
Mestre scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from
Coogle to give Guilford a 3-1 advantage. The Quakers held the Royals scoreless throughout the second half to secure the 3-1 conference victory.
The Quakers will travel to Elon, N.C. for an exhibition match against Elon University on Tuesday October 6 before traveling to Ashland, Va. on Saturday for conference play against the Yellowjackets of Randolph-Macon. First kick is set for 1:00 pm.
