Women’s Basketball Stunned by Randolph-Macon off Heartbreaking Buzzer-Beater

Massenburg’s career-high in points fails to propel Quakers to victory, ending historic-run.

GREENSBORO, N.C - Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) logged a career-high of 21 points as the Guilford College women's basketball team (11-1, 2-1 ODAC) fought commandingly as a defensive-unit, ultimately falling-short in the closing seconds to Randolph-Macon College (9-3, 3-0 ODAC), 64-63, on Jack Jensen Court inside the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
 
Guilford has a solid-showing working around the Yellow Jacket defensive-front, firing (33.9%) from the field, however faltering on the three-point arch shooting (26.3%) led to the Quakers downfall throughout regulation. Randolph-Macon would dominate the floor offensively, launching (32.8%) from the field, freezing Guilford's defensive-unit shooting (40.0%) from the three-point line to take control of the battle.
 
Massenburg would cruise the floor offensively for Guilford, shooting 7-12 (58.3%) from the field, 2-4 (50.0%) from the three-point line, and 5-6 (83.3%) off her free-throws. Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) dominated the paint, recording her fifth double-double of the season, recording 13 points off 13 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals on the night. Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) would follow-suit with a 12-point performance of her own, firing 4-14 (28.6%) from the field and 4-6 (33.3%) from the free-throw line, reeling in five rebounds and two steals in the process. Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.) registered seven points off shooting 3-7 (42.9%) from the field and 1-2 (50.0%) from the three-point arch, gathering one block and two steals defensively.
 
Makenzie Matheny would record Randolph-Macon's lone double-double off 20 points, firing 6-18 (33.3%) from the field, 1-1 (100.0%) from the three-point line, and 7-9 (77.8%) on her free-throws, collecting 13 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks throughout the evening. Erin Porter launched 5-10 (50.0%) of her shots from the field and 3-6 (50.0%) from the three-point arch to mark at 13 points. Emion Byers collected nine points on her own on the back of eight rebounds and two steals for Randolph-Macon.
 
The contest would open with a scoring-bonanza, going in favor of the Quakers on the back of Karly Glahn's (Charlotte, N.C.) netted three-point basket to put Guilford up 13-7 through one period.
 
Foul trouble for the Quakers would prevail for Randolph-Macon in the second-period off drained free-throws, clawing their way back to take a 26-24 lead heading into the halftime-break.
 
The Yellow Jackets would fight for an advantage in ball possession; however Guilford would match their juggernaut performance on the heels of Massenburg's six point-run in the third, crucial for the Quakers combat only being down 45-43 with ten minutes left in regulation.
 
Guilford would prevail off the late Dunn three-pointer to go up two with one minute remaining, however Matheny would put the game on ice off a last-second buzzer-beater to tie the game, draining the free-throw off the drawn foul in the closing seconds, ending the Quakers historic-run at 11-straight wins to start the season with a 64-63 loss to Randolph-Macon.
 
The Quakers will head on the road for the first time since November to continue ODAC action, clashing against the Eagles of Bridgewater College inside Nininger Hall on Saturday, January 10th. Tip-off commences at 4:30 PM.
