Men’s Basketball Falls To Washington & Lee In Comeback Fashion

Edwards notches double-double but second-unit scoring critical in conference clash

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's basketball team (6-5, 0-2 ODAC) could not hold off the second half rally by Washington & Lee University, dropping an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup that was tense through the finish, 90-88, on Saturday afternoon on Jack Jensen Court at the Ragan-Brown FieldHouse.

Guilford mustered just a .375 field goal percentage and went cold from range in the second half in the game while the Generals connected at a .433 rate overall and rode a string of triples in the second stanza to comeback in the contest. The biggest differences came at the charity stripe and from the reserves, on this day, though. W&L drew 27 fouls plus a coaches technical resulting in 41 free throw attempts, making 30 of them while GC finished 25-of-31 from the line. Meanwhile, the second unit of the guests netted 37 tallies against the Quakers' 17.

Dawson Edwards (Durham, N.C.) was the headliner in the game for GC, recording his first collegiate double-double, finishing a point-shy of a career-high for scoring with 18 making 9-of-10 at the charity stripe to get there and recording a new high-watermark of 13 rebounds including six on the offensive end. Braylen Salters (Cleveland, Ohio) was great in the opening half of play again, netting 13 of his 19 points on the afternoon, but foul trouble limited him to just under 21 minutes of play in the game. He finished shooting 5-of-17 from the field and 2-for-6 from three while making 7-of-9 from the line. Gabe Proctor (Apex, N.C.) equaled Salters' team-high scoring output of 19, connecting on 6-of-16 and 4-for-11 from deep while stuffing the stat sheet, claiming seven boards and three assists and matching his career-high of three steals. Reynolds Escher (Atlanta, Ga.) led Guilford with four assists.

Connor Amorosi paced all players with 23 points making all-eight of his free throws and 6-of-12 from the field to get there. Playing back in his hometown for the first time in his collegiate career, Addison Newkirk had a career-game, with his first-collegiate double-double of 17 points and a career and game-high 15 rebounds while Colin Ryan led all players with eight assists. However, it was bench boosts of 22 points from Kevin Die' and 13 from AJ Thomas were key in the victory for the Generals.

There was well-contested, albeit foul-filled basketball played throughout the first 12 minutes of play, but the Quakers, behind a 6-for-8 start from three, including a quartet of makes from range by Proctor, built up a 29-20 lead. Washington & Lee's first trip out of the under eight media break proved pivotal, however, as a technical foul was called, Amorosi converted on both free throws then he knocked down a three to complete a five-point possession. Guilford responded with their longest run of the game, rattling off nine-straight to build their biggest lead of the afternoon at 38-25, but it kept things from getting too out of hand. W&L rallied back and got inside single-digits for a while, but Guilford got the final run held a 52-42 halftime edge.

In the second half, Guilford upped their lead to 12 before the Generals made their run. Three-straight W&L points ahead of the first media timeout preceded Die' lighting the Generals spark from distance. He hit a trio of triples himself and Amorosi added one of his own as W&L pieced together what was a 21-5 stretch all-together, turning their deficit into a four-point lead.

Jumping ahead, GC trailed by one, 77-76 with five-and-a-half remaining. A 9-2 cluster opened a margin for the guests before Guilford worked back with a couple free throws from Edwards and a Salters three, just the Quakers' second make from range of the half. Four makes at the line by the Generals put GC's back against the wall at 90-84, but the hosts refused to go quietly into the final minute. Proctor converted a second-chance layup then the Quakers got the takeaway they needed and he got another two second-chance tallies, this time from the line. A Quaker stop set up a possession for the game in the closing seconds and Salters got a chance, firing from three for the win, but he could not convert, finalizing the score at 90-88.

The Quakers hit the road for the first time in a month-and-a-half, visiting No. 16 nationally ranked Hampden-Sydney College for a conference clash on Wednesday, January 7th, tipping off at 7:00 PM.
