FOREST, Va. – Coming out of the Methodist Fall Invitational with a victory in the top flight, Guilford College men's tennis'
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Singles Player of the Week for the week ending on September 7
th, as announced by the conference offices on Monday afternoon.
Entering the tournament, that featured five NCAA Division-II players and a trio of Division-III foes, as the No. 3 seed in the top flight, Mercedes swiftly dispatched of league rival, Satwik Kollepalli from the reigning ODAC Champions, Averett University, with a 6-0, 6-3 decision. Things got tough for the senior in the second round against No. 2 seeded Kristoffer Dalbak from the University of Mount Olive, with a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 10-3, come-from-behind victory. Facing the representative from the hosting Methodist University in the finals, No. 5 seed Matthew Hurley, Mercedes mounted a comeback again to secure the tournament win with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 win.
This marks the third time that Mercedes has been named ODAC Player of the Week. He previously was recognized last spring, for the week ending on April 14
th, and back in 2023, for the week ending on February 27
th. He is the fourth multi-time ODAC Player of the Week in Quakers men's tennis program history, and is now tied for the most such honors in program history with Tyler Mercier and Turner Votipka '15.
