Men’s Soccer Falls to Virginia Wesleyan After Not Fishing a Victory on Homecoming Weekend

The Quakers caught up in goal chances in the second-half, but two late scores for the Marlins would put the game on ice.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-5-1, 0-1-0 ODAC) was shut down from start to finish after a decisive offensive showing from Virginia Wesleyan University (6-1-1, 1-0-0 ODAC). Although the Quakers would execute six goal chances in the later 45 minutes of the clash, they could not cash in on any strike leading to a Marlins victory 3-0, at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.

Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) would hold the reins in goal for all 90 minutes of regulation. Vital-Peraza would reel in nine saves off of three goals against, from a shattering 21 shot attempts, bringing his record to 2-4-0 on the season. Virginia Wesleyan's keeper, Seth Brown, would see most of the work throughout the match, scooping up one save off of six shot attempts through 62 minutes of play, bringing his record to 3-0-0 on the season. Ben Haynes would also see time for the Marlins in goal, nabbing one save off a solo shot attempt.

Guilford's offensive front was exposed as Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Demark) led the squad with three shot attempts, one being on goal. Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) would follow suit with two shot attempts, one being on goal. Jose Melbert (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) and Frankie Avalos (Thomasville, N.C.) would each contribute to the box score with a shot attempt each.

Zach Bittler would lead the charge for the Marlins with two goals off of three shot attempts, all on goal. Ryan McAdams would add on to Virginia Wesleyan total with an early second half goal, tallying three shot attempts in the process. Gio Zizza and Jack Kaupas were superb for the Marlins in their goal attempts with two each, both being on goal.

The game would kickoff to be a defensive battle with both teams fighting for an opportunity to get on the board first. Virginia Wesleyan saw multiple opportunities, striking first at the 27th minute from an Bittler unassisted goal.
Guilford saw no chances to strike first as they would be held to one shot attempt on the night at the conclusion of the first half.

The Marlins would start off strong in the second half after an opening McAdams goal, cashing in from the Bittler assist in the 55th minute.

The Quaker defense would be subdued after Virginia Wesleyan dialed in a second Bittler goal, assisted by Grady Lawrence, wrapping things up for this ODAC primetime matchup on Homecoming Weekend.

Although Guilford would improve through an additional six goal attempts in the remaining 45 minutes of play, the Marlins would see through the Quaker defensive front and tally three times as many shot attempts as the Quakers. Guilford would ultimately be on the losing end tonight, resulting in a 3-0 decision in favor of the Marlins.

The Quakers will be for a clash on Wednesday, October 1st, at 7:00 PM to continue ODAC regular season play against Bridgewater College at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
