24th Soup Bowl Sees Record Number of Canned Goods Raised For Local Food Banks

Over 9,000 total canned goods collected for Greensboro community

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Through the tremendous efforts of Guilford College, Quakers Athletics, and the Guilford Student-Athlete Activities Committee (SAAC), a record sum of over 9,000 canned goods and nonperishable food items were collected in the 24th Soup Bowl food drive that took place in conjunction with the football contest.

"We are proud as this has been one of the most successful Soup Bowl canned food drives in recent years," Women's Basketball Head Coach, and SAAC Advisor, Sarah Mathews said. "We are incredibly proud of the efforts of our SAAC board to make this event a huge success and are so grateful to have the opportunity to continue this event and give back to the Greensboro community. And, of course, the most exciting part- it is 100% student-athlete led."

Overall, Guilford SAAC and the athletic teams raised over 9,000 total canned goods and nonperishable food items in the collection, with all raised goods going to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of NW North Carolina and the Quaker Cupboard.

Proud and appreciative of the collection efforts by all student-athletes across the 19 varsity athletic programs, three teams stood out, led by men's basketball who averaged 98 cans collected per player for the intra-department competition. They were followed by the women's lacrosse team with 79 cans collected on a per-player basis, and women's basketball took third averaging 50 goods per player.

As an Athletics Department, we commend the philanthropic efforts off all involved in the food drive. Special thanks to Coach Mathews in addition to SAAC President, Kelsey Buie, and the rest of the committee for their tremendous success in this event.
