Quakers Split Day Two of Cougar Classic To Complete Successful Opening Weekend

Guilford fell to Methodist before bouncing back to sweep Roanoke, closing out a strong season debut

DANVILLE, Va. – On Saturday, the Guilford College volleyball team (3-1, 0-0 ODAC) went 1-1 at the E. Stuart James Grant Center, with Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.) making a big impact in both matches. Her 12 total blocks helped keep Guilford competitive against Methodist University (2-1, 0-0 USA South), where the Quakers fell 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23), and fueled their afternoon rally to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-23) win over Roanoke College (1-3, 0-0 ODAC).

GAME ONE
In the first match of the day, Methodist defeated Guilford for a 3–1 victory.

For the Quakers, Duvall delivered 11 kills on an efficient .556 hitting clip, while Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) added nine kills, 12 digs, and three block assists for 13.5 points. Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, Puerto Rico) contributed nine kills, and setter Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) notched a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs. On defense, libero Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) collected a team-best 15 digs, with Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) adding eight and Amber Chiarolanzio (Deep Gap, N.C.) tallying 19 receptions and three digs.

For the Monarchs, Jamie Holton powered the attack with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Savannah Hovander tallied 11 kills on .333 hitting with three blocks. Addison Johnson chipped in 11 kills and eight digs, and Carlyn Tanis turned in a versatile line of six kills, 21 assists, and 10 digs.

The Quakers stormed through the opening frame, racing to a 12-0 start behind Cavataio's serve, which included three aces. The Monarchs finally broke through at 14-1, but Guilford never relinquished control, with Duvall and Whisnant supplying timely kills en route to a 25-16 win.

Guilford carried momentum into set two, using back-to-back aces from Moore and swings from Duvall and Alcantara to build a 9-3 cushion. Methodist regrouped quickly, though, as Holton and Johnson trimmed the deficit before Tanis tied it at 13–13 with an ace. In a back-and-forth battle, the Monarchs pulled away late to take the set 25-20.

The third set belonged to Methodist, sparked by Tanis' serving. She fueled a decisive 10–0 run with two aces and set up Holton and Hovander at the net as the Monarchs rolled to a 25–18 win and a 2–1 lead.

The fourth set was an even effort, with Guilford edging ahead 19–16 after kills from Alcantara and Haley Pasour (Stanley, N.C.), capped by a Mapes ace. Methodist regrouped out of a timeout and closed on a late surge, sealing the 25–23 win and 3–1 match victory.

GAME TWO
In the second match of the day, the Quakers bounced back and defeated the Maroons in a convincing 3-0 sweep.

Moore led the Quakers with 11 kills on .276 hitting, adding 13 digs and three block assists. Alcantara followed with 12 kills on .308 hitting, while Duvall contributed four kills and a team-high six blocks for 13 points. Johnson added five kills, and Pasour chipped in two kills and a block. Mapes steered the offense with 30 assists and eight digs, and Cavataio anchored the defense with nine digs and five receptions. Chiarolanzio added 14 digs and 12 receptions.

For the Maroons, Emma Catoe paced the offense with seven kills on .294 hitting and a block, while Sidney Alumbaugh tallied six kills on .294 hitting along with a match-high 19 digs. Setter Raygan Wade handed out 20 assists with three kills and five digs. Teagan Hubble posted 13 digs, and Dani Taylor and Kaci Morrison combined for eight kills. Haley Torbert and Anastazia Arvan also added three kills apiece.

Guilford once again opened the match with a dominant first set, racing out to a 10-1 lead behind strong serving from Chiarolanzio. A late ace by Moore and timely swings from Alcantara and Chiarolanzio helped Guilford stay comfortably in front before closing out the set 25-18.

In the second set, Moore and Alcantara ignited the Quakers' offense early, combining for several kills to spark a 9-4 run. Roanoke worked back to even at 16-16, forcing a Guilford timeout. Out of the break, the Quakers seized control with Pasour providing a key block and Duvall adding back-to-back service aces. Guilford closed the frame 25-18 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set proved to be the tightest of the match, with Roanoke striking first behind a kill and service ace from Wade to grab an early lead. Duvall then caught fire at the service line, reeling off four straight aces to spark a 12-7 advantage. The Quakers held firm down the stretch, with Johnson delivering the match-clinching kill off a feed from Mapes to seal the 25-23 win and complete the 3-0 sweep.

The Quakers will be back in action for their home opener on Jack Jensen Court on Tuesday, September 2nd, hosting Meredith College at 6:00 PM.
