Thomsen Secures First Head Coaching Win, Men’s Soccer Takes Down Methodist

Issac Garbia’s 44th minute tally stands as Quakers earn their first win of the season.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Guilford College men's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) traveled south for a strongly contested defensive battle that ultimately went in the favor of the Quakers, 1-0, against Methodist University (1-1-0, 0-0-0 USA South) on Saturday night at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) started in this hard-fought battle for GC, finishing with five saves on a battering eleven shot attempts faced and ultimately finished victorious, moving his record to 1-0-0. Methodist's keeper, Trey Gohr, finished with zero saves out of seven shots faced, ending his night on the losing end, moving his record to 1-1-0 for the Monarchs.

Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) drove the Quakers to victory with his first collegiate goal. Hector Rodriguez (Sanford, N.C.) recorded three shot attempts while both Dani Santos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Ken Vasquez (Pittsboro, N.C.) each logged off-frame looks.

Steven Floyd led the Monarchs with three shot attempts, all being on goal. Garrett Panos recorded two shot attempts on the night, while both Angel Alarcon and Camden Hancox each recorded a shot attempt, both being on goal.

The entire first half was a defensively contested match after multiple shot attempts were missed or blocked on both sides of the ball. Ultimately, Garbia led Guilford to the opening goal of the match after a deflection on off a shot attempt led him to a pure strike into the net, giving the Quakers a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

At the start of the second half, both sides were feisty towards each other for ball possession as fouls were being drawn left-and-right leading to multiple free kicks for the Monarchs and the Quakers driving them down the field.

Multiple close calls had occurred for Guilford as Methodist was executing their goal shot attempts well, but all would wind-up in the hands of Kelley throughout the evening.

The Monarchs would make a late push through a hurry-up offense, but would be subdued from the strength of the Quaker backline leading to a Guilford win, 1-0, for Interim Head Coach Will Thomsen's would receive his first career win heading a program.

The Quakers will be back in action on Wednesday, September 3rd, back at home at 4:00 PM to take on Bluefield University at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.
