'
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Led by a stellar performance from
Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Maggie Hartnett (Oxford, Maine) the Guilford College women's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-5 ODAC) obliterated their opponent Randolph College (0-11, 0-7 ODAC), 25-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Quakers kept the WildCat roar to a whimper, outshooting Randolph 43-12 and 27-6 in shots on goal. Heavy pressure from the defense caused ten turnovers from the WildCats to add to their 17 total turnovers. GC tied the record for second most goals scored in a single game, the most in program history since March 30, 2022, against Hollins University.
Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) shut her opponents down in goal, only giving up three goals with six saves, improving her record to 3-6. Mireya Norville got the start for the WildCats but had a tough time keeping the balls out of her net. Her ten saves did little harm as the Quakers never let up, dropping her record to 0-11.
Hartnett was the star player of the day, claiming seven goals and six assists in their emerging victory. Wood was another standout, scoring six goals and one assist to eclipse her career-bests in points and goals scored in a single game.
Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) followed with five goals of her own, demanding her presence be known both in the circle, with a career and game-high nine draw controls, and on the quick turnovers handed over by the Randolph offense.
Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) rounded out the stat sheet with three goals, one assist, seven ground balls, and three caused turnovers.
It was a slow day for the WildCat offense, as their three lonely goals came as singular scores by Emille Taduran, Mackenzie Woodson, and Maddie Friel. Woodson was the only player for Randolph to claim an assist.
The WildCats won the draw to open the game, but a quick free position attempt shot by Friel missed wide clearly set the tone for the opponent. GC wasted little time, successfully clearing the ball and scoring just over a minute into play. The combination of the clear successes and ground ball pickups were enough to power the GC offense to nine goals by the end of the first quarter. A singular goal scored by Taduran late in the quarter was the only meow to be heard.
Randolph copied their opening draw control in the second quarter, failing once again to capitalize on their free position attempt and losing the ball. Friel slipped up on the turnover, but recovered with a goal to make it a pair on the scoreboard. The tiny pounce from the 'Cats did little to scare away their prey as Garland, Hartnett, and Gravley each added one in addition to Wood's two goals to make it 14-3 going into the half.
The black and yellow remained silent in the third as they watched the Quakers endlessly score one goal after the other. Light on her toes, Gravley swooped in on the ground ball pick up for a crisp pass to Hartnett. Seeing her teammate open beside the goal, Hartnett flung the ball downfield to
Kaylee Carr (Plant City, Fla.) for the first of her back-to-back goals. A goal scored
Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) would end the third quarter and advance the lead to 19-3.
To no surprise, the Quakers would pile on the pain in the fourth quarter. With five minutes remaining,
Natalia Rubio (Greensboro, N.C.) came in hot, picking up her first goal of her career. A draw control by GC and free position shot scored by Garland would seal the deal for a final score of 25-3.
The Quakers will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. this coming Saturday, April 12, to take on the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University at 6:00 PM.
