Women’s Tennis Solid in Doubles Play, Lynchburg Escapes with Win

Success in doubles play not enough to creep past Hornets

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Guilford College women's tennis team (6-6, 4-4 ODAC) faced off against the University of Lynchburg (6-3, 3-2 ODAC) on Saturday afternoon at E.C. Glass High School but took the loss, falling 4-3.

The Hornets set the tone early on at No. 1 doubles where Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) gave it their all, but ultimately fell 6-2 to Maria Caro and Ashley Hair. The No. 2 tandem of Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) was victorious over Kayla Kosiorek and Harper Dodd, 6-2. Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) and LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) excel in their No. 3 doubles match by the same score to Elora Grochowski and Reese McAtee.

When discussing the singles, Belnap showed grit until the end and went head-to-head against Caro in three sets, resulting in a loss. She had a 6-4 win and two 6-4 losses. On court two, Mendez was tagged with a loss against Kosiorek 6-4, 6-2 while Nhouyvanisvong fell against Hair, 7-5, 6-2. Things were looking up for Guilford as Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) dominated her opponent, Dodd, in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Soto Salgado aggravated the issue for the Hornets by defeating McAtee 6-4, 6-2 while Lupo was edged out by Grochowski 6-2, 6-3 on court six.
