Women’s Tennis Falls to Red-Hot Piedmont

Quakers struggle to gain momentum in 7-0 home loss

GREENSBORO, N.C. The Guilford College women's tennis team (6-7, 4-4 ODAC) ran into a red-hot Piedmont University (18-2, 6-0 CCS) squad on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 in non-conference action at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts.

Coming in with an 18-2 record, the Lions set the tone early in doubles play, sweeping all three courts in dominant fashion. On court one, Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) put up the strongest fight but ultimately dropped a 6-3 decision to Sarah Row and Jordan Ballard. Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) and Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) fell 6-1 at No. 2, while Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) and LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were handed a 6-1 defeat at No. 3.

Singles play didn't get any easier for the Quakers. Piedmont stayed in control throughout all six courts, taking each match in straight sets. At the top spot, Belnap fell 6-1, 6-0 to Alyssa McSpadden, while Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) battled at No. 2 but came up short 6-3, 6-2 against Bri Laidman. Nhouyvanisvong was outpaced 6-0, 6-1 by Caroline Morrison at No. 3, and Sizemore dropped her match 6-0, 6-1 to Ballard on court four. Soto Salgado and Lupo rounded out the lineup for Guilford, with Soto Salgado falling 6-0, 6-2 to Olivia Carpenter at No. 5, and Lupo dropping a 6-1, 6-3 contest at No. 6 to Hollan Rabensdorf.

With the loss, Guilford will look to reset and bounce back as they return home for their final home game of the season, hosting Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday, April 13. First serve is scheduled for 12 P.M.
