Women’s Lacrosse Bested by No. 17 Roanoke

Quakers’ first conference win remains elusive

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's lacrosse team (3-8, 0-4 ODAC) was defeated by No. 17 nationally ranked Roanoke College (8-4, 4-2 ODAC), 20-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

The Maroons dominated this one from the jump, scoring ten goals before the end of the first quarter en route to the win. They held a 37-7 edge in shots, and 28-2 lead in shots on goal while corralling 23 ground balls against the Quakers' nine and holding a 20-6 advantage on the draw.

Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) has seen better nights in net for GC, as she permitted 20 goals against a dozen saves, but she did collect a team-high six ground balls. She went the distance in the cage to fall to 2-5.

The first of three Maroons to man the net, Kendall Todd played the first quarter but did not face a shot on target improving to 8-4 nonetheless. Amber Stallings allowed three goals against one save, playing a majority of the game, specifically the second and third stanzas, before Maddi Barnhorst finished it off with a clean fourth making one save.

Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) was productive scoring two of GC's three goals and adding a team-high three draw controls. Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) netted the other Guilford tally while Leyla Strong (Concord, N.C.) caused a turnover and got two ground balls.

The top scorer for RC was Maddie McDonald who scored five goals to go with two assists. Grace Koutouzis added a hat trick and a helper while Reaginn Bingaman was impactful defensively with four caused turnovers and six ground balls. Regan Tharaldson dominated the circle with nine draw controls.

The Maroons put this one away early scoring five times in the first five minutes with McDonald opening the scoring followed by back-to-back tallies by Koutouzis, an Addison Widmer score, and then McDonald again. Widmer scored her second just after the ten-minute mark then McDonald scored on the free position, Raegan Becker found pay dirt, Koutouzis scored for the third time, and finally Zoe Blair on a free-position got the game to running clock just 13-and-a-half minutes in.

The guests got the first two goals of the second stanza before Gravley got fouled in the arch for GC to draw a free position chance, and she took advantage from the right wing, going top shelf for the Quakers initial goal. Roanoke would score three before the period was through, however, to own a 15-1 lead through 30 minutes.

DeFeo got her tally in the third, drawing a free position straight-away and going to the bottom left for the score. After RC scored one, Gravley netted her second, rotating at the top of the arch then going high short side for the tally. The Maroons scored once more in the third before recording a trio in the fourth to bring the final score to 20-3.

Guilford ventures to Virginia Beach next to play Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon. First draw is set for 4:00 PM.
