Softball Shut Down by Lynchburg in Doubleheader Defeat

Quakers swept by Hornets due to home team’s timely hitting & stellar pitching

LYNCHBURG, VA - Continuing the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schedule, the Guilford College softball team (9-17, 0-8 ODAC) fell to the University of Lynchburg (13-9, 4-4 ODAC) in both games, 9-0 in five innings for the first and 6-1 in the second, at Moon Field on Wednesday afternoon.

With this loss, it now makes the series against the Hornets 14-37 with UofL in charge. Before this matchup, Guilford had not lost both games in a doubleheader since 2022 at home.

Game One:

Pitching wise for the Hornets, Kailey Dorcsis (7-4) controlled the game, allowing just two hits over four scoreless innings while striking out four. Kate Charlton closed out the game with a perfect fifth inning for Lynchburg as well. As for the Quakers, Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) (3-5) was handed the loss after two innings pitched, allowing five runs (five earned) alongside five hits, and walking three. Micah Wilson (Asheboro, N.C.) was the reliever for GC as she surrendered four runs (three earned) on three hits in two innings.

UofL got the ball rolling early in the first as Alyssa Talayumptewa, who recorded two hits and two RBIs, doubled to left center to get an RBI that allowed Lexi Powell to score. Powell later singled to center field in the second, drove in two RBIs and advanced to second to push Layla Lietzan to third which allowed Zoe Elliott to score alongside Alex Love to make it 3-0. Shortly thereafter, Sarah Watts singled to right field, drove in two RBIs, and helped Powell and Lietzan to score. Lietzan and Addison Walter added two more runs for the Hornets before Madison Barnes delivered a key moment in the fourth inning, smashing a two-run triple to push the lead to 9-0.

For Guilford, Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) and Olivia Shelton (Stokesdale, N.C.) each recorded a hit, but the Quakers struggled to generate scoring opportunities.

Game Two:

The Quakers had a tough time creating any offense against Lynchburg's pitching trio of Kaitlyn Charlton (1-1), who grabbed the win for game two,  Emily Charlton, and Logan Curtis, who combined for five strikeouts and allowed just one run on six hits. GC's pitching staff featured Abbey Whelan (Gaithersburg, Md.) (3-5), who was credited with the loss, and Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.), who combined for five strikeouts. Northen delivered two scoreless innings in relief.

Lynchburg set the tone in the first inning, plating three runs thanks to a two-run single from Barnes and an RBI single by Caitlyn Hudnall. The Quakers answered back in the second when Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) drove in pinch-runner Nicole Gumula (Wellington, Fla.) with a double to center field. A Guilford standout was Gray who went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, while Whelan contributed both on the mound and at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double of her own.

The Hornets extended their lead with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, capitalizing on a double, another error on the Quakers, and an RBI single to bring home Kaleigh Hackett to make it 6-1.

The Vixens of Sweet Briar College come to town for the doubleheader on Saturday April 5 at Haworth Field to continue conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM and game two is expected at 3 PM.
