LYNCHBURG, Va. – After a jam-packed week of games, The Guilford men's tennis team (4-6, 3-3 ODAC) hopped back into the win column after an impressive performance on the road Sunday afternoon, defeating the University of Lynchburg (6-2, 1-2 ODAC) by a 4-1 margin at the Crosswhite Athletic Club.
In doubles play, Guilford and Lynchburg traded blows in a back-and-forth battle. The duo of
Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) and
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) placed Guilford ahead early on with a dominant 6-1 victory over Patricio Zepeda and Sebatian Sierra at court three. Lynchburg responded with a blow of their own at No. 2, as Sebatian Soria and Alex Rintoul beat
Evan Wong (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.), 6-4, to even the score. The deciding match came at court one, where
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) battled to a hard-fought 7-6 triumph over Luca Morbioli and Timothee DePaquit, clinching the doubles point for the Quakers
Leading into singles play, GC continued to pester their opponent. Hermes led the charge at No. 2 against Soria, securing a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Mercedes followed with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win against Morbioli at the top flight. In flight four, Tuten secured the match for the Quakers, defeating Rintoul 6-3, 6-3. The only singles loss came at court three, where Austin fell in a tight match, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, to Sierra. Matches at court five and six were left unfinished, with Wong leading Zepeda 6-3, 0-0 and Oye battling DePaquit in a tiebreaker.
With the victory, the men's tennis team looks to build on their momentum as they return home for their next match on Friday, April 5, when they host William Peace University. First serve is set for 2 P.M.
