Men’s Tennis Back In the Win Column, Defeating Lynchburg

Quakers rally in singles play to break losing streak

LYNCHBURG, Va. – After a jam-packed week of games, The Guilford men's tennis team (4-6, 3-3 ODAC) hopped back into the win column after an impressive performance on the road Sunday afternoon, defeating the University of Lynchburg (6-2, 1-2 ODAC) by a 4-1 margin at the Crosswhite Athletic Club.

In doubles play, Guilford and Lynchburg traded blows in a back-and-forth battle. The duo of Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) and Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) placed Guilford ahead early on with a dominant 6-1 victory over Patricio Zepeda and Sebatian Sierra at court three. Lynchburg responded with a blow of their own at No. 2, as Sebatian Soria and Alex Rintoul beat Evan Wong (Greensboro, N.C.) and Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.), 6-4, to even the score. The deciding match came at court one, where Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) battled to a hard-fought 7-6 triumph over Luca Morbioli and Timothee DePaquit, clinching the doubles point for the Quakers

Leading into singles play, GC continued to pester their opponent. Hermes led the charge at No. 2 against Soria, securing a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Mercedes followed with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win against Morbioli at the top flight. In flight four, Tuten secured the match for the Quakers, defeating Rintoul 6-3, 6-3. The only singles loss came at court three, where Austin fell in a tight match, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, to Sierra. Matches at court five and six were left unfinished, with Wong leading Zepeda 6-3, 0-0 and Oye battling DePaquit in a tiebreaker.
