Men’s Tennis Wipes Out William Peace for Second Straight Victory

Quakers roll past Pacers with clean doubles sweep & dominant singles play

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College College men's tennis team (5-6, 3-3 ODAC) put on a show in a non conference duel on Saturday afternoon, securing a commanding 6-1 victory over William Peace (2-4, 1-2 USA South) at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts. The win marked the Quakers' second win in a row and extended their winning streak against the Pacers to four matches.
 
GC overwhelmed WPU early, securing all three matches to claim the opening point. At No. 1 doubles, Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Talton, Kade (Pilot Mountain, N.C) impressed the rest, taking down Juliann Starland and Chapman Kinlaw with a 6-1 victory. Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) and Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) took the crown on court two, defeating Patrick Buckler and Carlos Correa, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, down went Angel Araiza and Michael Zang due to Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) and Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) stealing their thunder with a 6-3 final score.
 
The home-team heroes were nearly flawless, winning five of six matches in straight sets going into singles play. Mercedes continued his stellar play No. 1 singles, leveling Starland 6-1, 6-0 in a stellar performance, continuing his win streak to two. Hermes called déjà vu after winning 6-2, 6-2 over Araiza, while Austin delivered a flawless shutout performance of 6-0, 6-0 against Buckler. Tuten gave an excellent showing of 6-2, 6-0 on court four versus Kinlaw while Johnson took a hit against Carlos Correa on court five with a score of 6-3, 6-3 in favor of the Pacers. Talton secured the last win of the day, upending Zang in a close battle of 6-4, 7-5.
 
Guilford looks to continue their non conference schedule, as they are set to host Pfeiffer University. First match is set for 2 PM on Tuesday, April 8.
