WINCHESTER, Va.- The Guilford College women's tennis team (6-5, 4-3 ODAC) battled conference opponent Shenandoah University (4-3, 2-2 ODAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Lowry Tennis Courts but came up short, falling 4-0 in a match that was cut short due to rain.
The Hornets took early control in doubles play, sweeping all three courts to secure the first point of the afternoon. At No. 1 doubles,
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) put up a strong fight but ultimately fell 7-5 to Olivia Guzzo and Tanea Spruill. The No. 2 tandem of
Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) was edged 6-4 by Allison Cherwien and Erin Talko, while
Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) and
LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) dropped their No. 3 doubles match by the same score to Kendra Gillette and Leigha Montrief.
Heading into singles action, the Quakers looked to turn the tide but struggled to find momentum before weather forced an early conclusion. At the top spot, Belnap was overpowered by Spruill, falling 6-1, 6-2. Mendez put up a strong fight at No. 2, taking Guzzo to three sets before ultimately dropping a tight 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision. Soto Salgado fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, to Talko at No. 4. With the Hornets clinching the match, the remaining contests were left unfinished due to the rain.
Up next for the women's tennis team is a road trip in eight days as they are set to face the University of Lynchburg on Saturday, April 5th. Start time is set for 3 PM.
