Women’s Tennis Falls in Road Matchup Against Sweet Briar

Quakers struggle against unbeaten Vixens in 7-0 defeat

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Guilford women's tennis team (6-4, 4-2 ODAC) faced a tough challenge on the road Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 to Sweet Briar College (8-3, 4-0 ODAC) in an ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) matchup at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.
 
In doubles, Sweet Briar set the tone by sweeping doubles action. At No. 1 doubles, Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) were overpowered by Alex Guilarte and Ana Patino, falling 6-0. The Vixens continued with a win at No. 3, where Atty Bestwick and Lucia Bovard secured a 6-1 victory over Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) and LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.).The final doubles contest saw Isadora Lima and Maggie Minton defeat Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) 6-2 at court two, giving Sweet Briar a 1-0 lead in doubles.
 
The Vixens continued on with their dominance leading into singles play, sweeping all six matches in straight sets. Lucia Bovard was the first to clinch a win at court six, shutting out Ward 6-0, 6-0. Lima followed with a  6-0, 6-0 win over Soto Salgado at No.4, while Minton extended Sweet Briar's lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Lupo at No.5. Guilarte kept the Vixens rolling at No. 3, defeating Nhouyvanisvong 6-0,6-0. At court two, Caracciolo secured the win over Mendez, 6-0, 6-2. The most competitive match of the day came at No. 1 singles, where Belnap put up a strong fight in the second set but ultimately fell to Patino, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), sealing the sweep for the Vixen's.
 
With the loss, the Quakers will look to bounce back as they continue ODAC play, traveling to Winchester, Va. as they face Shenandoah University on Friday, March 28th. Start time is set for 3 PM.
