Men’s Tennis Powers Past Bridgewater for Third Conference Win

Mercedes and Hermes earn fifth-consecutive win as a duo in dominant 6-1 victory

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College College men's tennis team (3-3, 3-2 ODAC) continued its strong form in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Friday afternoon, securing a dominant 6-1 victory over Bridgewater College (1-8, 0-3 ODAC) at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts. The win marked the Quakers' third conference triumph of the season and extended their winning streak against the Eagles to three straight matches.
 
GC established their presence early on in doubles play, securing two of three matches to claim the opening point. At No. 1 doubles, Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) were in full control, dismantling Matthew Leonard and Corey Beshoar with a 6-1 victory and earning their fifth-consecutive win as a duo. On court three, Evan Wong (Greensboro, N.C.) and Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) delivered a flawless performance, shutting out Coree Nicely and Levi Waidelich 6-0. The Eagles salvaged a win at No. 2 doubles, where Eli Morela and Mark Gordon defeated Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.) and Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) 6-3.
 
Heading into singles play, the good guys were nearly perfect, winning five of six matches in straight sets. Mercedes continued his stellar play No. 1 singles, blanking Leonard 6-0, 6-0 in a flawless performance, continuing his undefeated streak this season. Austin followed with an authoritative 6-1, 6-0 win over Steven Perry, while Tuten and Wong delivered back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at court four and five against Gordon and Morela, respectively At No. 6 singles, Oye sealed the Quakers' dominant afternoon with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nicely. The Eagles' lone point came at court two, where Beshoar edges Hermes in a hard-fought 6-4,7-5 battle.
 
The men's tennis team looks to extend their streak to three, as they are set to host Averett University. First match is set for 2 P.M.
