Softball Splits Rivalry Doubleheader with Greensboro

Quakers explode in middle innings for game two after dropping contest in game one

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College softball team (8-8) divided the series against cross-town rival Greensboro College (13-7), 9-1 in six innings in the first game and a bounce-back win of 7-3 in the second in this non-conference matchup in Penn-Wright Stadium at Barber Park on Wednesday.

Game One:
Ella Ebert (3-4) earned the win for Greensboro, holding Guilford to just four hits and one earned run over six innings, striking out four. Pitching for GC, Abbey Whelan (Gaithersburg, Md.) (3-3) took the loss, allowing five runs over four innings while striking out two. Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief.

Despite a solo home run from Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) and a multi-hit game from Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.), the Quakers could not overcome the Pride's early lead and late offensive surge. Johnson provided Guilford's lone run in the top of the fourth with a solo homer, her fourth of the season. Gray went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) added a single and Alyssa Daniel (Spring Lake, N.C.) swiped a base as a pinch runner to spark a potential rally in the sixth.

Greensboro was led by Anna Frazier, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Ivy Ray finished 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI, and two runs, while Olivia Hyatt added two RBIs and scored twice. The Pride racked up ten hits and stole eight bases to assert dominance. The Pride scored three runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach, but Guilford was unable to contain Greensboro's late roar despite their best efforts and a close game through five innings.

Game Two:
Pitching wise for the Quakers, Gray (3-3) went the distance and delivered a complete game, her fourth this season. She allowed six hits, three earned runs, and struck out one. Hampel (5-2) took the loss for Greensboro giving up three earned runs on three hits over 2.1 innings with three errors and walking three. Frazier came on in relief and allowed four more runs over the next 4.2 innings.

The Quakers set the tone early, scoring in the first inning when Olivia Shelton (Stokesdale, N.C.) drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Gray. Guilford extended its lead with a two-run third inning, capped by Kalissa Williams' (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) two-RBI double to right field.

In the fourth, the Quakers looked like the queens of the jungle as they plated four runs. Shelton added an RBI fielder's choice, while Gray followed with a two-run single, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a double. Williams added her second double of the game to drive in another run, ending the rally and giving Guilford a 7-0 lead. Greensboro fought back in the later innings, scoring one run in the sixth and adding two more in the seventh, but Gray and the Quaker defense stood their ground.

Williams finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Kendall Boggs (Stoneville, N.C.), Kelsey Buie (Lexington, N.C.), and Stoner each chipped in with hits. Whelan also delivered a pinch-hit single late in the game.

For the Pride, Jillian Vitamanti paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Katherine Connell added a double and Frazier went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

The Eagles of Bridgewater College are the opponents that open up Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play as the game is scheduled for Saturday, March 22nd at 1 PM for game one and 3 PM for game two.
