Men’s Tennis Ends Roanoke’s Win Streak with Dominant 6-1 Victory

Quakers strike on all cylinders, snapping Roanoke’s four-match win streak

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (2-3, 2-2 ODAC) delivered a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, rolling past Roanoke College (5-4, 1-2 ODAC) 6-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) showdown, ending Roanoke's win-streak. In an ironic twist on St. Patrick's Day weekend, the Quakers had no luck with the weather, as the match was relocated indoors to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center, despite a week of beautiful outdoor conditions.

Guilford set the tone early on in doubles play, securing the opening point with two convincing wins. At No. 1 Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) continued their dominance, securing yet another win as a duo, taking down Federico Maccari and Julio Marques 6-3. On Court two, Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.) and Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) were nearly flawless, cruising past Ian Michel and Emiliano Ramirez 6-1 to lock up the doubles point for the Quakers.

Carrying that momentum into singles action, Guilford won five of the six matches in commanding fashion. Mercedes was unstoppable in the top singles slot, shutting out Maccari 6-0, 6-0. Hermes followed with a strong performance at No. 2, defeating Ramirez 6-1, 6-3. Austin continued the Quakers' surge at No. 3, overpowering Marques 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) bounced back into the win column, with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over Hardt Lesko. Oye closed out the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against John-Henry Harrington at No.6. Roanoke picked up its only point in flight five, where Jacob Nichols edged Evan Wong (Greensboro, N.C.) in a tight three-set match. Wong claimed the first set 7-5, but Nichols responded with a 6-2 second-set win before securing the match in the final set.

The men's tennis team will look to carry this momentum into their next battle, as they are set to face Bridgewater College, at home. First match is set for 2 P.M.
