PREVIEW: Fifth-Seeded Men’s Basketball Set for High-Stakes Showdown with Top-Seeded Randolph-Macon in ODAC Semifinals

Guilford looks to ride momentum from quarterfinal victory into clash with the regular season champions

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The fifth-seed Guilford College men's basketball team (20-6, 12-4 ODAC) continues their playoff push with a trip to the Salem Civic Center on Saturday, March 1, to battle top-seeded Randolph-Macon College (23-3, 15-1 ODAC) in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Semifinals. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 PM.

Fresh off a statement victory over Virginia Wesleyan University in the opening round, the Quakers are riding momentum into this massive second round clash. GC avenged a regular-season loss to the Marlins with a dominant 74-61 win, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive tenacity. Now, Guilford turns its attention to the Yellow Jackets, a perennial ODAC powerhouse and the regular season champions. The two teams met earlier this season in Ashland, Va., where Randolph-Macon protected home court by a tally of 86-55. Nick Farrar (Apex, N.C.) and Luke Proctor (Apex, N.C.) led the charge the last time out with Farrar contributing 14 points and six rebounds, shooting 5-of-11 from the field. Proctor added 11 to the tally on 4-of-11, with two rebounds and one assist. Amr Areikat was the standout for the Yellow Jackets, notching 18 points on 6-of-10 to go with six assists and two rebounds. Keishawn Pulley Jr. earned 15 points in 30 minutes of gameplay. Malcolm Hodges pitched in 14 and Jabril Robinson added 11 of his own in the Yellow Jacket win.

This matchup pits Guilford's explosive offensive trio of Farrar, Gabe Proctor (Apex, N.C.), and Chase Ellis (Douglasville, Ga.) against the defensive juggernaut of Randolph-Macon, which allows just 59.4 points per game, ranking first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation. The Quakers will need to continue their hot three-point shooting, as they are second in the conference in three-pointers made per contest (8.8) while shooting 37.5% from beyond the arc.

Farrar remains the Quakers' offensive catalyst, averaging 19.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, both team highs. With a trio of ODAC Offensive Player of the Week awards and a First Team All-ODAC selection, the senior looks to continue his impressive season as the Quakers are in pursuit of banner-number five. Gabe Proctor (Apex, N.C.), one of the best, if not the best, sharpshooter in the ODAC, is Guilford's second option shooting an impressive 43% from downtown, averaging 11.6 points per game. Ellis is the team's third option notching 9.2 points per contest while producing the second-best shooting percentage on the team (.500). Caleb Farrish (McLeansville, N.C.) continues to exemplify the true meaning of a lockdown defender ranking as one-of-four players in the conference that ran in the top-15 in both steals and blocks. Luke Proctor (Apex, N.C.) rounds out the starting five averaging 9.0 points and a team-high 2.4 assists.

Randolph-Macon's depth and efficiency have been major factors in their dominance this season. Robinson is the soul of the offense and one of the top distributors in the league, leading the Yellow Jackets in points (13.9) and assists per game (4.1). Pulley Jr., one of the biggest threats from downtown, leads the Yellow Jackets in three-point shooting, 37% from the field and leading the ODAC in three-pointers per game with 2.5. Malcolm Hodges is the third member of the starting five, contributing 9.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 22.6 minutes of gameplay. Amr Areikat tallies 9.4 per contest with 5.2 boards. Liam Joyce rounds out the Randolph-Macon starting five contributing 7.1 points 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

Tipoff between Guilford and Randolph-Macon is set for 2:00 PM. The winner will advance to the ODAC Championship game on Sunday, March 2, at 2:00 PM at the Salem Civic Center.
