GREENSBORO, N.C.- It was a beautiful afternoon at the Ragan-Brown Field House, as the Guilford College women's basketball team honored their seniors on Senior Day. The Quakers closed out their regular season in dominant fashion, securing a decisive 79-74 victory over Hollins University.
Guilford finished their season 15-10, 9-7 in conference play and secured a no. 6 seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament, where they will look to face Washington and Lee University.
Senior
Courtney McMillan (Lexington, N.C.) led the charge with 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals, shooting an efficient 8-for-11 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Following in her footsteps was senior
Jael Hall (Charlotte, N.C.) who provided a spark with 11 points, nine of those from beyond the arc, shooting a game-high 3-for-4 from deep.
Carleigh Perry (Faith, N.C.) posted a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds, her second of the season.
Zoe Bayer (Les Sables d'Olonne, France) notched ten points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting.
The game opened with both teams struggling offensively as neither side found much rhythm in the first few minutes. Hollins capitalized first, jumping out to a 6-2 lead behind early baskets from Zaria Holden and Ariana Gutierrez. Guilford answered with a strong inside presence from McMillan, who battled through double teams to convert a layup and keep the Quakers in striking distance. A late bucket by Bayer and a defensive stop in the closing seconds helped the Quakers trim the deficit, trailing 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
GC found its stride in the second quarter, flipping the momentum entirely. The Quakers came out with relentless defensive pressure, forcing multiple Hollins turnovers that translated into fast-break opportunities.
Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C) opened Guilford's scoring efforts with a free throw. McMillan continued to be a dominant force inside, notching six points in the paint, while Bayer contributed with a jumper and an and one opportunity.
Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.) kept the momentum going with a free throw and three-pointer. Guilford outscored Hollins 24-9 in the period, closing the half with a commanding 32-23 advantage. Defensively, the Quakers held Hollins to just 23.1% shooting in the quarter, stifling their rhythm and forcing contested shots.
The Quakers came out of halftime with even greater intensity, delivering their most dominant quarter of the game. GC's offense fired on all cylinders, as they shot an outstanding 66.7% from the field. Perry started the scoring with a three pointer, followed by a layup. Hall caught fire scoring back-to-back three pointers, both assisted by Dunn, igniting the home crowd and extending the lead. Hollins struggled to keep up, managing just 11 points in the quarter. By the end of the quarter, Guilford extended their lead to 59-34, all but putting the game out of reach.
Guilford maintained their dominance in the final period of play. The Quakers' bench provided valuable minutes, with Hall and Dunn continuing their connection as both notched a pair of threes, each assisted by each other.
Hannah Ajayi (Chapel Hill, N.C.)
, Anaida Datilus (Chantilly, France)
, and
Skyler Furr (Warrenton, Va.) added the finishing touches, controlling the glass and converting at the line. Defensively, Guilford continued to frustrate Hollins, limiting them to 6-for-33 shooting from beyond the arc throughout the game. The Quakers outscored Hollins 20-13 in the final frame, closing out the game by a score of 79-47
With the win, Guilford heads into the ODAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and is set to travel to play Washington and Lee University on Tuesday, February 25th. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
