LEXINGTON, Va. – In the first game of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, the Guilford College women's lacrosse team (1-1, 0-1 ODAC) fell to No. 7 nationally ranked Washington & Lee University (1-1, 1-0 ODAC), 25-0 at Watt Field on Tuesday evening.
The Quakers did not get a shot in the game as W&L attempted 34 while also holding a 20-5 edge on draw controls. GC finished just 2-of-10 on clears.
Under duress from the opening draw,
Kennedy Gates (Cornelius, N.C.) prevailed all 60 minutes in net for GC getting peppered with 28 shots on target, allowing 25 goals against three saves while collecting a trio of ground balls to fall to 1-1. Generals' keeper Gabbi Bici also went the distance, but ended up untested to improve to 1-0.
Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) was Guilford's top player with two draw controls, a caused turnover, and a ground ball.
Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) also had two draw controls while
Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) had a draw control and a ground ball.
W&L saw 13 different players score a goal including seven with multiple. Sophie Edwards led their efforts with four goals and an assist. Payton Haley, Brianna Benoit, and Grace Kim had three goals apiece with the later adding a helper. Cat Caples led all players with five draw controls and Kelly Polacek had two goals and two assists for the hosts.
Washington and Lee put this one away early. securing the opening draw, they earned a quick free position and Emma Marsh executed for the opening tally 47 seconds in. Gravley got GC the ensuing draw, one of just two in the frame for the Quakers, but a swift turnover opened the door for a Caroline Foster goal with Marsh on the distributing end this time. Foster assisted a Reedie Warwick goal moments later making it 3-0 barely four minutes in. Benoit on a free position, Polacek, Claire Horner, Edwards, Kim, Haley on a free position, and then Haley again on a man-up chance pilled on the scoring as the hosts got the game into running clock before the first quarter concluded.
Horner, Benoit, Edwards, and Kim all scored their second goals before Hannah Van Son got the score to 15-0 at the half.
The third quarter saw Haley, Benoit, Edwards, and Kim all score their third tallies, Van Son net her second, and Betty Boatwright get into the fun for the hosts before they took their foot off the gas in the fourth with just four goals to bring the final tallies to 25-0.
Guilford is scheduled to host North Carolina Wesleyan University next on Thursday, February 20
th beginning at 3:00 PM although that contest is weather permitting.
