WASHINGTON D.C. – Whether it be by land or by air,
Caleb Robles (Wilmington, N.C.) had his way with the Gallaudet University (1-3, 1-2 ODAC) defense on Saturday afternoon, posting a record-book-rewriting performance for the Guilford College football team (2-3, 1-2 ODAC), claiming their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory in shutout fashion, 55-0, at Hotchkiss Field.
Robles accounted for 317 of the Quakers season-high 558 yards of offense between his rushing and passing outputs. On the ground, he became the first GC player to eclipse the century mark this year, going for 144 yards on just 19 totes, while finding the endzone four times in the first half alone, becoming the first GC player to score four rushing TDs in a game since De'Eric Bell '19 did on September 13
th, 2018 against Davidson, with his rushing touchdowns total, total touchdowns total, and points total, of 24, all ranking tied for second-most in a game in program history.
The sophomore signal-caller was not the only Guilford player rewriting the record books, as
Asher Frisbee (Statesville, N.C.) converted on all seven of his PATs, tied for sixth-most makes of that kind of kick in a single game. Meanwhile,
Travis Burton (Pikeville, N.C.) equaled his season-opening sacks and tackle for loss totals of 3.5 and 4.5 to place second marks in each of those top-ten lists, sitting tied for third and tied for eighth-most respectively. Nationally, only seven players have notched 3.5 sacks or more in Division-III football this season, and now Burton has done it twice.
As a team, Guilford finished their first shutout and did not commit a turnover for the first time since playing Greensboro in 2024, and had 500 yards of total offense and 300 rushing yards as a team for the first time since when they played Sewanee last year. Additionally, they eclipsed the 50-point threshold for the first time since scoring 61 against Davidson in 2018.
Robles also did some damage through the air for Guilford, completing a career-best 73.1% of his 26 pass attempts (min 10 passes) for 173 yards and one passing touchdown.
Luke Hyatt (Wadesboro, N.C.) got a short run, finishing each half but completed 4-of-5 for 85 yards and a score.
Malik Woodard (Wilson, N.C.) was the team's second-leading rusher behind Robles, taking 13 carries for 83 yards.
Josh Campbell (Reidsville, N.C.) and
Lucas Smith (Staley, N.C.) each ran for a touchdown. In the receiving game, both
Cameron Campbell (Flowery Branch, Ga.) and
Parker DeHart (Catawba, N.C.) had more yardage themselves than the entire GU passing attack combined. Campbell had a game and career-best seven grabs for 78 yards and a touchdown. DeHart, meanwhile, hauled in three catches for 69 yards and a score.
Neither Bison passer enjoyed much success although starter, JeVaughn Sargent had a little more completing 3-of-7 for 23 yards. Dylan Officer only connected on 3-of-12 while both passers had one interception and were sacked four times apiece. Sargent was Gallaudet's top rusher with 23 yards on six carries. Dwayne Collins II was their top receiver with two catches for 28 yards as one of just two GU players with multiple catches.
Defensively, Burton led Guilford with a career-best 12 total tackles, three solo, tacking on a pass break-up to his sack and TFL production.
Nick Iannone (Wellington, Fla.) was close behind with 10 tackles, seven solo efforts, along with 3.5 TFLs and 2.5 sacks.
Aden Reece (Wilmington, N.C.) had six total tackles with a recovered fumble and
Jonathan Brown (Wendell, N.C.) was targeted heavily, but performed well, coming down with the first-two interceptions of his career in addition to breaking up three passes.
Dawson Ethington paced all players with 14 total tackles for Gallaudet. He was followed by Jacob Hundley, Carter Johnson, and Jaykuss Figueroa with nine each.
Receiving the ball to start, the Bison got a couple pop runs from Marcus Gabriel and Sargent, but ultimately their drive stalled out in the redzone due to a Burton sack, a strong solo tackle by Iannone, and a fourth down TFL for
Zy'Quan Williams (Stantonsburg, N.C.). The ensuing Quaker possession showed promise, but ultimately met the same fate of a fourth down stonewall. It got a second life however, when just three plays into Gallaudet's drive, Jaylen Johnson made a catch, but just dropped the ball when turning up field. Reece jumped on it and GC's offense cashed in going 39 yards on 10 plays before Robles punched it in from three yards away on fourth down.
The defense forced a three-and-out to open the second quarter, and after the punt, GC instantaneously doubled their advantage, as on the first play, Robles exploded through the middle took it to the house with Guilford's longest run of the year so far, a 51-yard chunk for a score. That would prove to be the first strike of a dominant second quarter of play. Another three-and-out preceded another Quaker scoring trip, this time a more methodical, eight play, 50-yard venture capped by Robles making it a hat trick, with his third scoring tote, this one from three yards out. Following a Browne interception on the first Bison snap of their next drive, Guilford took advantage of the great field position, taking six plays to go the final 28 yards for the score with Robles crossing the goal line for the fourth time, this one from nine yards away. GU finally got a touch of headway on their next drive, largely thanks to a big kick return, but their trip was halted by the GC defense inside the ten on a failed fourth down try. Instead, on just the fifth play of Guilford's drive, DeHart got free and
Luke Hyatt (Wadesboro, N.C.) hit him in-stride and the senior receiver slipped the last defender for a 50-yard scoring strike, and despite a failed pass attempt on the PAT, the Quakers had mounted a 34-0 lead into the locker rooms.
Back-to-back explosive runs by Woodard on Guilford's second possession out of the half set the tone for a nine-play, 58-yard trip that saw Campbell shed a tackle in the backfield and get in for a touchdown on a fourth down rushing score.
After a Guilford punt return touchdown was wiped off the board by a penalty early in the fourth, the Quakers got their passing attack working with throws to Campbell and
Tristan Bailey (Statesville, N.C.) to work down the field. In the end, the sophomore receiver, Campbell, would be on the receiving end of a score for the third-straight week, bringing in a seven-yard grab for another Guilford score. Later in the quarter, the Quakers capped an 11-play, 47-yard drive with Smith punching it in from one yard away. All the while, the defense took care of their part, polishing the shutout effort and the 55-0 victory.
Guilford comes back to Appenzeller hoping to ride some momentum into a matchup with Shenandoah University in week six. That matchup will kickoff at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 11
