Volleyball Battles to the Wire in Five-Set Loss to Shenandoah

Mapes tallies career-high 53 assists in hard-fought road match

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Guilford College volleyball team (12-8, 4-5 ODAC) went the distance Saturday afternoon, pushing Shenandoah University (10-7, 6-2 ODAC) to five sets before falling in a thrilling 3-2 battle (25-22, 25-16, 25-20, 25-15, 23-21) inside the James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics & Events Center.

The Quakers were led by Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.), who delivered a dominant offensive performance with 25 kills, while Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) posted a career-high 53 assists to go with nine digs. Defensively, Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) anchored the back row with 20 digs, and Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.) contributed six total blocks at the net.

Shenandoah was paced by Hannah Hylton's 18 kills, Amanda Ingrassia's 28 assists, and Autumn Stroop's 23 digs.

The opening set featured several momentum swings, as Duvall and Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, Puerto Rico) delivered key kills to keep Guilford within reach. Despite their efforts, the Quakers fell just short in a tightly contested start, 25-22.

Guilford bounced back in the second, with Moore powering six kills to lead a commanding 25-16 win.

Shenandoah answered in the third, edging out the Quakers 25-20 despite a strong defensive showing from Whisnant and a timely block by Aleigh Williams (Walnut Cove, N.C.).

The Quakers regrouped in the fourth, finding their rhythm once again to even the match with a decisive 25-15 victory.

The fifth and final set proved a nail-biter, featuring 13 ties and five lead changes. Both teams traded points deep into the frame before Shenandoah's Amber Shifflett delivered the final kill to clinch the 23-21 decision.

The Quakers are back in action on Wednesday, October 22nd, when they take on Roanoke College for another conference matchup, this time at home. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. in Ragan-Brown Field House.
