Men’s Soccer Falters to Averett’s Superb Goalkeeping Play

Precise offensive takes by the Quakers would not be enough to send Guilford any opportunities to cash in.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-9-2, 0-4-1 ODAC) was firing on all cylinders in the offensive attacking-zone in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) clash against Averett University (4-4-4, 2-2-1 ODAC). However, many mishaps on the defensive-side of the ball would result in a 2-0 in favor of the Cougars on Wednesday night, at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
 
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) held strong throughout all 90 minutes in regulation for the Quakers. Vital-Peraza would reel in two saves off of two goals against, from six shot attempts. He would fall on the losing end of tonight's match, dropping his record to 2-8-1 on the season. Averett's keeper, Anibal Lopez, would draw the start for the Cougars in goal. Lopez would snag seven saves off a peltering 21 shot attempts, improving his record to 4-4-4 on the season.
 
Guilford would spot many opportunities to deliver points on the board, however did not maximize on their chances. Dani Santos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) would lead the charge for the Quakers with three shot attempts, all being on goal. Hector Rodriguez (Sanford, N.C.) would follow-suit on his quick deliverance around the Cougar defense with his four shot attempts, one being on goal. Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) juked through Averett's defenders in the attacking-zone, firing three shot attempts, one being on goal. Demetrio Candela-Habana (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was on-point in possession of the ball, striking two shot attempts, one being on goal.
 
Averett's offensive performance would be precise as Will Davis would supply the opening goal for the Cougars off of two shot attempts, both being on goal. Nicholas Breen would put the game on ice after his lone goal of the night off of one shot attempt. Moses Kashindi would display his accuracy for Averett with his two shot attempts, one being on goal.
 
The conference showdown would open still with both squads fighting for possession in the beginning minutes of play. After multiple fouls and control changes in the first half, the Cougars would strike first in the 14th minute of play off of the Davis goal, assisted by Alvaro Alvarez del Rio, into the top shelf of the net.
 
The Quakers would hold their ground, getting numerous chances in the closing minutes of the first half. However, Guilford could not drive-in their opening point in the first-half due to late foul calls and off-target shot attempts.
 
Guilford would begin the second half more aggressive as they would draw multiple fouls in the possession favor of the Quakers. Though, things would blunder as a multitude of yellow cards would pursue for both teams.
 
Averett would wrap things up with a closing goal off of the header by Breen in the 86th minute that was positioned by Hudson Bradley off of the assist. Although Guilford would place many shot chances to keep up with the Cougars on offense, the probability of orchestrating a goal would subside through a 2-0 decision in favor of Averett.
 
The Quakers are heading on the road once for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) showdown against the Generals of Washington & Lee on Saturday, October 18th, 2025 at Alston Parker Watt Field. First kick at 1:00PM.
