CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Guilford College volleyball team (10-7, 3-4 ODAC) went 2-0 on Friday morning at the Johnson & Wales University tri-match in the JWU Wildcat Center, flying-high with a morning sweep (25-19, 25-12, 25-17) of the host Wildcats (5-13, 1-1 C2C). Â
GAME ONE
The Quakers began their morning with a 3-0 sweep to Johnson & Wales University.
Â
Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.) kicked off the Quakers run with the lone double-double in the game with 11 kills and 10 digs, along with a smooth .688 hitting percentage while
Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) followed-suit with nine kills and one service-ace, respectively.
Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, Puerto Rico) striked for Guilford with eight kills, and
Amber Chiarolanzio (Deep Gap, N.C.) led the Quakers in scoring two service-aces.
Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was locked-in on the defensive-front with nine digs in the morning matinee.
Â
For the Wildcats, Jordan Mann, Karlin Lincoln, and Erica Rawlings cashed-in on five kills each. Madison Leslie would command heavily for Johnson & Wales in notching 12 assists. Chanel Garcia recorded a match-high 12 digs on defense for the Wildcats.
Â
In a tight set one from the opening battle, the Quakers would roll victorious from the closing service-ace by Cavataio, sealing the set point, 25-19 in favor of Guilford.
Â
The Quakers would roll-into set two with heavy momentum, taking a commanding set point, 25-12, after the spot on kill was made by Alcantara, driven from the assist caused by
Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.)
Â
The third set was a competitive showdown, but ultimately the Quakers would pull-through after the Wildcats defensive falters and the match-sealing kill driven by
Angel Brown (Mount Pleasant, Mich.), sealing the sweep from a 25-17 final-set win.
Â
GAME TWO
In their second match, Guilford was smooth sailing, notching another 3-0 victory in the afternoon against NCAA Division II Trinity College of Jacksonville.
Â
Moore led the Quakers in nine kills, while
Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Sheryangelis Cay Barbosa (Juncos, Puerto Rico) tallied seven kills each in game two. Additionally, Cay Barbosa would out-shine the rest of her teammates in tallying 18 assists and seven service-aces. Whisnant was defensively-sound as well, nailing two blocks respectively.
Â
For the Eagles, Mackenzie Thomas would power-through with seven kills and a solid .333 hitting percentage. Kacey Brown and Haylie Higgins would add on to Trinity's offensive success with three kills each. Kaylin Hunter gave the Eagles any chance to score with seven assists in the match, respectively.
Â
Set one would be a doozy, as Guilford would excel from start to finish from a decisive rally which was put on ice by Moore's set winning kill, leading to a 25-11 decision in the Quakers favor.
The second set would be the same story, as Moore's set-grasping block steered the Quakers to another assertive set-point, 25-13.
Â
Guilford would respond with their best set of the tri-match with Alcantara's game-securing kill, wrapping things up for the Quakers in their second sweep on the day. The room Guilford built in match two could be no match for Trinity's chances for success, driving the Quakers to a 25-10 set triumph, conquering the match 3-0.
Â
The Quakers are back at home for another non-conference battle Wednesday, October 15th against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University at Jack Jensen Court inside the Raegan Brown Fieldhouse. First serve at 6:00 PM.
