ROANOKE, Va. – Overpowering Hollins University (3-4-0, 1-1-0 ODAC) from the opening kick on Wednesday evening, the Guilford College women's soccer team (6-1-2, 0-1-0 ODAC), led by
Lily Brown's (Boone, N.C.) hat trick, secured a 7-0 shutout victory, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at Berkley Field.
With her trio of tallies, Brown reaches double-digit goals for her career and becomes the first Quaker to find paydirt thrice in a single match since Baylee Greenwood '24 had that total against Virginia State University on September 9, 2023. It is also the most goals by a GC player in a conference match since Madison Green '23 against Sweet Briar in 2022. At the team level, GC netted eight goals in the contest, ninth-most in a single match in program history, and they picked up seven helpers along the way, good for a tie for sixth-most in a game.
Registering her third clean sheet across her five starts in frame,
Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) was only lightly challenged to the tune of five shots requiring just a single save for the shutout on this night, but as the benefactor of the Quakers efforts in front of her, she upped her season mark to 3-0-2. The same was not true for Hollins keeper, T Shover who was under duress all night, facing 37 shots, 19 on net finishing conceding eight goals against 11 saves to fall to 2-5-0 on the year.
Brown also did a little distributing in the contest, adding an assist to her goal-scoring for a seven-point evening. Among her tallies was her first game-winner since 2023. A cluster of Quakers contributed to the scoring after her with
Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) notching a goal and two assists.
Ava Arias (Pittsboro, N.C.),
Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.), and
Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.) all had one goal and one helper while
Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) netted a single goal and
Grace Overton (Apex, N.C.) contributed the final assist in the GC onslaught.
Evelyn Keefer was the most effective Hollins attacker with four shots in the contest, including their singular look on goal. Izzy Workman had the only other HU shot attempt.
Maintaining tons of early pressure, Guilford had chances but did not breakthrough until the 15
th minute of play. Brown fielded a throw-in along the boundary on the right wing and did everything herself, getting to the center of the pitch at the top of the '18, driving down the middle, making multiple defenders miss and firing from about 12 yards out off the left post. Her right-footed shot into the middle-left of the net was good for the senior's second goal of the fall as the earliest tally the Quakers have netted this season thus far.
Brown would up her line to a brace in the 26
th minute. With Yates navigating the left wing, she turned and chipped a feed just beyond the '18 to the senior forward. Settling the ball and battling through the contact of a Hollins defender, Brown got to a good spot at the top of the '6 off the right post and used her left foot to roll a low-middle shot into the twine for her third goal of the campaign.
While Brown's tandem of tallies is all they mustered on the scoreboard, Guilford simply dominated the first half of action. They maintained a 17-3 advantage in total shots including 7-0 in shots on target while also being the recipients of all four corner kicks from opening stanza.
Wasting little time before adding to their advantage, netting their third goal in the 49
th minute of action. Working in the center of the offensive zone, Yates distributed a pass to the left wing and a wide-open Parker. Obtaining full possession and turning the corner as she approached the end line, the winger got a point-blank one-on-one chance directly off the right post and easily shot the ball into the twine for her second goal of the year.
Netting their fourth goal of the evening, Guilford had a set piece off a corner deterred but maintained possession. Eventually, amidst the chaos, the ball found Brown who dished to a wide-open Kahre at the PK stripe and she used one touch of her left foot to go mid-right on the frame for her second goal of the year in the 54
th minute of action.
Parker fed a brilliant pass from midfield on the left wing, perfectly leading Arias in the 69
th minute. Blowing past the defense and catching up to it at the top of the 18', Arias shook Shover and a defender to free up a wide-open net for her fourth goal of the season. Miller got in on the fun just about three minutes of play later on a very similar play, just setup by Kahre on a dish down the middle of the pitch this time for the freshman's third tally.
In the 82
nd minute of play, Brown made it a hat trick for GC, taking an Overton feed that split a couple defenders and easily beat the keeper for her fourth goal of the campaign. Finally putting the finishing touches on the scoring in the 87
th minute, Arias connected with Yates on one last tally, her fourth of the year, finalizing the evening's score at 8-0.
The Quakers host ODAC action at Appenzeller Field for the first time this fall next, as they welcome No. 15 nationally ranked Washington & Lee University for a premier showdown on Saturday, October 4
th. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM.
